My husband is currently considering this surgery, and I've gone to the initial consultation with him. The doc we visited was trying to push the actual Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, but my husband does not want to deal with the malabsorptive component of that.
One useful thing that came out of the consultation was when the nurse referred us to the website Obesity Help - Weight Loss, Surgery, Support Groups, Forums, Surgical Procedures. There are all ages and types of men and women on that website and I definitely recommend you check it out. There is also an extensive doctor referral section there as well.
My Aunt just had the gastric bypass a few weeks ago. She is very heavy, the lapband was not an option for her. She said she would not have done it again if she knew what she'd go through.
You're welcome! If my husband has the procedure, he is going to go to a Lap-Band specialist who does a lot of them. From what I've read, the timing and the volume of the band fills is integral to this procedure's success as well.
If you decide to go through with it, please post your experience. My husband is still on the fence and I'm not sure what he's going to do.
HAve you talked to your family physician? If not, may I recommend that first?
Not everyone who wants a bariatric surgery is a candidate for such. Not every insurance plan will cover the expenses for the procedure either. Many companies demand a verifiable diet and exercise program for a specific amount of time prior to authorizing such a procedure. Many people think this is the "easy way out" for losing some weight, but are not in the weight category which makes them available for the procedure.
IF you are eligible for this, be sure to find a board certified surgeon, and check your surgeons record on your states medical examiner board website.
Eddie - I've already researched all of that...except for a surgeon. I'm not quite ready to go that far yet. Yes, I am a candidate, insurance covers it, i have done verifiable programs....etc...I know this is not the "easy way out" which is why this isn't an easy decision
I am not suggesting this, but just for your information. My family doctor's sister, who is a nurse, had the lapband done in Mexico. If anyone has insurance issues, perhaps this is an option.
Since the family is very medically oriented, I'm sure they researched this thoroughly before she did it. I hear she is doing great after having it done.

I am glad you have done so. Just take your time to research the right surgeon, and please do visit the medical examiner board in your state for the information about your physician.

Wow, did you ring a wrong bell with me. I would not go to Mexico for ANY procedure, and I live just a few hours from the border. BUT- silly me, I am involved in healthcare, and help with the treatment of those who were mistreated and ignored by the "physicians" there.
