My husband drinks that and it bothers me. I asked him to cut down or stop and he won't. I've been told (by drinkers) that it isn't a lot. But I think it is?
According to national guidelines (perhaps from the U.S. Surgeon General's office, but not sure of my memory on that) for optimal health in regard to alcohol consumption, men under the age of 65 should not consume more that two drinks per day, as defined. Definition: one drink equals one 12-ounce beer, 5 ounces of dinner wine, or one and a half ounces of 80 proof hard liquor. After age 65, that recommendation goes down to one drink per day.
I agree with the OP that what her husband drinks is "a lot", in fact a whole lot. The fact that some heavy drinkers consume even more is hardly relevant.
OP, you can pretty much give up any hope of convincing your husband to stop or moderate by talking to him about it. Serious drinkers are NOT going to make any changes until something really disastrous happens, and often not even then.
I am reminded of an Ogden Nash poem:
Which the Chicken, Which the Egg?
He drinks because she scolds, he thinks;
She thinks she scolds because he drinks;
And neither will admit what's true,
That he's a sot and she's a shrew.
So don't become a shrew about this. I believe your husband probably has lost all choice about the level of his drinking, although some very heavy drinkers are not alcoholics and can and do actually stop or moderate on their own, given sufficient reason. A true alcoholic will need (in addition to becoming motivated him or her-self) some sort of intervention and support, be it AA or something else and may need medically supervised detoxification. Cold-turkey withdrawal from alcohol is considered a medical emergency and may lead to death in some cases if not treated.

The 1.5oz shot has 42.62 mL of fluid so your husband is drinking 35 shots per week or 5 shots per day. It is excessive in my opinion.

Heres a dozen pages on what alcoholism is all about. Alcoholism - Mayo Clinic
Not sure what you can do about it as you will just come off as nagging, be assured his need for alcohol will increase as time goes on and that 2 bottles a week is probably just the tip of the iceberg, you got a big problem..
OP see if you can get him to take a blood test and see what his liver elevation is and if there is any damage to his liver. That may wake him up if he wants to live a little longer.

My husband used to tell my one liter of Vodka a day wasn't that much. He would tell me that doctors would prescribe Whiskey in the hospital to help patients to sleep so clearly it is fine......he drank himself to death September 3 2014.
