You mentioned drinking water from the wrong side of the cup but I'm not sure what that means. A remedy that works 100% of the time for me is drinking water upside down, or as upside down as possible. You don't have to stand on your head, just sit on a chair, then bend over with you head close to the floor, putting two hands on the floor for balance and your butt still on the edge of the chair. You'll be drinking water upside down at about a 45 degree angle. It's enough to always stop the hiccups for me and I usually only have to drink one gulp of water.
Probably because while you are drinking, you aren't breathing.
Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. I've made a list, and come next hiccup day, I'll be trying the suggestions out. I'll let you know what works.
I drink a full glass of water through a napkin/paper towel. Just stretch the napkin over the top of the glass, tip it up and drink the water down. I don't know why, but it's always worked for me and for anyone that's tried it (to my knowledge). I've been doing it this way for 40 years.
I have read all the posts because I wanted to see if anyone had used this idea/remedy because this is the one we use in our family (for decades). The only twist I have on this suggestion is that we sip the water through the paper towel (napkin) without getting the water dripping all over ourselves and I think somehow that alters the ratio of air in the diaphragm. I'm sorry I cannot explain it any better than that and I don't know what the "science" is behind it.
Regardless, I think you should try the ones you believe to be reasonable enough to do and please post back to let us know of your successes and/or failures with the various recommendations. Good luck op!
It's funny what we do to get rid of them. I eat a bite of a banana and hiccups are gone immediately. If there are no bananas, I wait it out. I'll be sure to keep the sugar remedy in mind.
Plug your ears, hold your nose, and drink some water through a straw.
That's my remedy, minus the nose holding. My niece does the nose holding, but really it's not necessary as long as you plug your ears.
