WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. patients who use certain asthma inhalers made with ozone-depleting propellants should talk to their doctors now about alternatives ahead of a ban that starts in January, health officials said on Friday.
Albuterol inhalers that use chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) to propel the medicine into the lungs will no longer be sold in the United States after this year because CFCs damage the Earth's ozone layer.
Which increases the price you pay because this new container is not sold at generic prices even though it is a generic medicine. Another way for corporate America to milk us to death.
Wow thanks John for the post. I had no idea. My daughter used to use the Albuterol inhaler, then her doctor switched her to Adivar. It didnt work as well for her, as you can only use it 2 times a day. She needed something she could use as needed. He put her back on Albuterol. I am going to talk to him this coming week and see what he suggest now.
Yikes, if it's eating holes in the ozone layer, I wonder what it's doing to people's lungs??
I have an inhaler for occasional use, and last time I filled it they did not give me the generic. I thought it was just an error and called to grumble to the pharmacist (my husband picked it up for me), but they told me about the switch.

I used to have to take Advair twice a day but luckily my asthma is calmed down at the moment. You can use both Advair and Albuterol at the same time at least according to my doctor.

I think they are talking about the other ones. Not the ones that you slide over and hear a click for the next dose. The ones that project the steroid meds like a can of hairspray-for instance I think is what they are going to ban. Please correct me if I'm wrong!!
The ones you take in case you have an attack that have the metal canisters. Those are the ones.

Ditto, everything.
Another very lovely and useful aid is Spiriva HandiHaler. It's a once a day med which enhances the marvelous effects of Advair. My pulmonary specialist assures me, and so does my pharmacist, that Albuterol can be used as an "emergency" inhaler up to four times a day while one is also daily using both Advair and Spiriva. I don't need all this stuff now, but I have them around just in case.

You are right...but it is still albuterol its full name includes HFA for the delivery method. Twice the price for us now.

We've been using Walgreen's for years...never had a reason to go anywhere else, but they have now given it to us. I spent last week transferring all of our prescriptions to CVS. Hubby had an inhaler prescription called in to CVS and when I picked it up was surprised to hear it was only $15. You can imagine the conversation..."you have the old one...how long are you gonna keep getting it?"
Walgreen's has ripped us off of $20 for each inhaler we've purchased there for about the entire year because they don't stock the old inhaler anymore. I will never go back...I don't care how much they lose and now you know to look around.
If your paying cash for your meds, call your local Target Pharmacy.
Target has been very consistent in providing lower priced medications vs Walgreens and CVS (probably the two highest priced chains in my opinion and i work in the medical industry.)
Just call your Target Rx and ask them to give you the price, you may find some suprising savings. Good luck.
