Did that ever happen to you. Sometimes when lying down I would feel some digested food coming up the esophagus but never like last night. I was choking and jumped out of bed. I know what it was. It was pizza sauce I had made a pizza for supper. So I wonder what to do. I elevated my head with two pillows to make sure it didn't happen again. I wonder if there is a name for it. It is scary as hell since I had to gasp for breath and I don't want it to happen again.

GERD

Esophogeal (sp?) reflux...or just plain reflux.

It sucks and sounds like the acidity of your supper probably made it worse.

You can try putting a couple blocks or pieces of wood under the feet of your bed (under your head) to give it a slight incline. It will help some.

And see your doctor who will send you to a gastro or maybe an ear-nose-throat specialist.

Reflux is the name...raise the head of your bed...2 pillows is bad for your neck! And, don't eat after 7pm. Put a couple books under the legs at the head of your bed.

My problem is that I have a mattress on the floor so can't put anything under legs that aren't there. So I put some boards under the head end of where I sleep. Will see how that works.

Drink cold water as it'll lower the acidity. You might first have to gargle and rinse out the food particles. All the other advice is fine. Sleep at an incline. Don't overeat or eat late. Avoid certain foods or drinks (coffee in my case).

Possibly. You'd be better off with something like Gaviscon, but you may as well try the Tums first.

Your rep points were at 666, so I fixed that.

Do not sleep on your back! If you are sleeping on your side you're much less likely to choke. The obese woman singer with The Mamas and The Papas died from choking on regurgitated food and I'm sure others have also.
