It sounds like they ruled out other causes.

There should be an underlying injury to the chest that caused the inflammation. Excessive coughing from pneumonia or bronchitis could bring it on.

Had it several months ago; was told to take 3 Advil every 8 hours. It went away in about 3 weeks.

This is a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning that cardiac and lung diseases wer ruled out and the pain could be explained by findings attributed to costochondritis. This is nothing to worry about, though there are things you can do to manage it (ie. NSAIDS or other recommended pain control if needed, proper body mechanics and posture, avoiding repetitive movements or heavy lifting, seeing a physical therapist if needed, etc...). It can take up to one year for the discomfort to completely go away. There is great info on readily available medical sites (ex. Medscape, Mayo Institute, AAFP journal articles, others).

Gilah, I have never heard of this condition. Gonna google it in a few minutes; but wanted to ask--how are you feeling now?

It was my other half...
I suspect he did something and didn't tell me...
I was out of state.
Came back and he was in so much pain.
We thought it was his heart.
Since I posted, the pressure and pain has disappeared.
Still fatigued though.
West Seatlle was correct. This is what the ER Dr. Said.
cardiologist ran a whole slew of tests.
We are baffled.

I think I had it for a few months. My sternum would hurt when touched or pressed on, and it would often pop when I pulled my shoulders back. I was working in a car at the time, and I thought it was due to bad posture putting pressure on my sternum somehow. I pretty much ignored it and stretched a lot (no anti-inflammatory or pain meds). It eventually went away.

Default Egd

It is call COSTOCHONDRITIS, inflammation in the chest. I had an EGD test done and found out what it was which took me 20 years to find out what I had. I do take Advil, but still will not go away. I am 67 years old retired and not enjoying myself because no one in my family believes it is real. I want it to go away so bad, but there is no real treatment for it.

Old thread but had to report my situation. First time I had it was years ago. Woke up in middle of night thinking I was having a heart attack. But feeling my chest, felt that my ribs were sore. Doctor visit was a waste of time. A couple of days later, soreness went to left side ribs to around back. Pain stopped after about a week but ribs have been sore to touch for years.
Last week woke up in middle of night with pain in two ribs on left side back. Have been taking aspirin one day, alternate with ibuprofen. Painful ribs have stopped but back to ribs being sore to touch. Od thing is that it's only been on the left side.
