Lots of home remedies
I was raised on natural stuff and am a firm believer in it. Here is a site that specializes in natural home remedies.
http://www.just-for-you-homeremedies.com
There are remedies for ear aches, tooth aches, liver problems, etc.
Maybe it could help answer some of your questions.

Natural Healing
Some of you may or may not know about Youngliving, but my family and others that I know have been using the oils for different illnesses and they work. All natural. I have been using them on my son (9os) and not one cold, etc...If at all interested browse the website. https://www.youngliving.org/henryishirelle
I decided that i no longer want to take medication or go to the doctors. I mean hell, back in the days, all there were oils and herbs, etc..

The one thing I am surprised that is not here is the neti pot and flushing the sinuses yourself. I have had cronic sinuscitis with year round allergies and seasonal flare ups. Sinus infections were often. I was on so many sinus and allergie medicines as well and antibotics a lot. I got on a friends computer and researched natural ways and discovered the nedi pot and how to flush them out yourself.
What a differance that has made in my life! # 1 thing is I have NOT had a sinus infection since and my sinuses have settled way down. It is SO cheap to flush them yourself, it is not habit forming (just how good it feels makes you want to do it all day) and the only side effect is that you feel so good afterwards! I recently bought a sinus flush kit at the drug store to give that a try and that works just as good.
It cleans out the allergins I am allergic to in my nose, cleans out the mucus so it isn't there to drip down into my throat and chest and cause problems there. It is CHEAP, SAFE and EFFECTIVE!
(It take little effort to learn how to do it too!)

Yes, the neti pot saved me from a sinus infection this past winter when I got the horrible flu going around. My Mom recommended I try it and I was really surprised at how well it worked. It is a little weird using it at first but I got used to it. I have seasonal allergies so will give it another try towards the end of spring and see how I do.

Amazon.com: SinuCleanse - Neti Pot Kit: Health & Personal Care
You can find the "real deal" at most health food stores. I prefer the classic Neti pot ... they're ceramic and quite lovely actually but above is an Amazon link for you. Since Amazon is selling them, i wouldn't be surprised if Walgreen sells them too.

I have to ask:
Whenever I've gone swimming and gotten water up my nose it is anything but a pleasant experience. In fact, it's rather painful. Do you use a saline type of solution in one of these?

I use a little bit of sea-salt in warm (not too hot) water. If i'm living in a place where the tap water is well water i use that. Otherwise, i use distilled water or really good bottled water.
It doesn't hurt like when water gets up your nose when you go swimming but i can't explain why.
I do it over the sink. The head is tilted to the side and water is slowly poured into one nostril and it naturally comes out the other nostril. So it's not like sucking it up your nose accidentally.
At first, if you're nervous and there is some resistance, it can be awkward. But once you get over the fear of doing something that's so unfamiliar, it's really quite easy ... and very effective.
