Another Director in which I work along side always talk about how he believes in working long hours and weekends(all of which are not required) and requires his subordinate staff to do so( just for the sake of it).

I told him, I'm an "Efficiency Director". He said--"what's that?" I told him, I want my staff gone after 8 hours. I believe in quality of life, not working long hours just for the sake of it. I do not nor do I want my staff working 10,12 hours per day and being on call on the weekends.

He couldn't grasp why I don't work like he does. It's about the quality of hours worked not how many hours work.

All that to say---this guy is very overweight, he eats bad and smokes. He spends so much time at work he cannot care for himself physically and mentally. He thinks working long hours makes him a better employee.

Even our boss wonder why he does it. He doesn't get anymore accomplished working 80 hours than I do working 40 hours SHARP.

I would be a happier employee working for YOU and not for HIM!

(He would have everyone quitting...)

As they say: workaholics and alcoholics wear the same uniforms!

One self-destructs from drinking too much, the other from working too much!

There's AA for alcoholics, and there should be a WA for workaholics!

If I were on salary, I'd say 40 hours is plenty, thankyouverymuch, and I'll take whatever sick time, vacation time, holiday pay, and personal time available when and as needed/appropriate.

If I'm on hourly, I'll do the same, but I might volunteer for an hour or two overtime, say, before the Christmas rush, a month before my scheduled vacation, and at random various other times during the year when there's a long weekend, so I can afford to do something nifty with the extra $ in my paycheck

I'm also happy with compensatory time off. We used to get that when I worked for the phone company. If I needed to leave just an hour early for a doctor's appointment, rather than have to put in for half a day's sick leave or personal time (since it had to be taken by half or full days only, not hours), I'd just work through my 15-minute break every day for 4 days in a row. Or I'd bring my lunch in and eat it at my desk while working, once or twice that week (since we got hour-long lunches, UNpaid).

He's a prime candidate for early and permanent retirement due to heart attack.
