Can hearing loss due to Otosclerosis be bad for understanding broadway musicals (symptoms, treatment)

I have hearing loss in one ear due to Otosclerosis. Recently, I went to see a famous musical in a theater. But I could hardly distinguish the words. I could hear it, but did not understand the words. It seemed like a loud music to me. Is that normal?

Have you had any treatment to stop the progression of otosclerosis?

It could also be a processing issue - which can be easily treated by an audiologist as well. It's just having trouble distinguishing words from the background noise. At least that's how it was recently explained to me at my latest hearing appt.

In all honesty I have excellent hearing and still have trouble understanding dialogue in recent Broadway shows. Both the music and singing have become extremely overpowering in many cases (volume doesn't necessarily equal quality). It may not be you at all, but you could always request audio assistive devices, as most theaters provide those these days.

Word differentiation is one of the symptoms of hearing loss. Count yourself lucky if trying to figure out what they're singing in a musical is the only time you have trouble.

I "mis-hear" people talking right in front of me all the time. I hear them talking, but it sounds like mumbling. Only when I can *watch* them talk can I tell exactly what they're saying, word for word.
