Does anyone know? How long will it take for my lungs to regenerate now I've quit smoking?

My father died at 61, he was a chain smoker of UN-filtered cigs. one heart attack and gone.
I had asthma at 6 and lived under a tent with sulfur fumes at night for 4-5 yrs and the doc said I grew out of it some how (meaning asthma). Seem like everyone smoked back then and so did I from 15.
It's a very bad habit to quit and sometimes I still want one but I'm glad I finally quit as I have lung issues as mentioned in my early post.
I smoked from 18 til I became pregnant with my first child at 29. Then, I started up again 10 years later while going through a divorce, layoff, 9/11, etc.
I then quit for good and while I have not always made good choices, that is one of the smartest things I have ever done. I realized I was too smart and intelligent of a person to continue such a dangerous and stupid habit. I don't mind dying one day, but I would never forgive myself if I were laying in bed dying, gasping for air, and leaving the people I love, and the life I love, because of something I did to myself and had a choice of stopping.
That was 12 years ago, and I am one of the healthiest 50 somethings I know. I meet other women my age who continued to smoke, and have the wrinkles. yellow nails, and nasty raspy to prove it, and thank God for helping me quit.
Just wanted to say that the commercial where the young girl says "My grandmother said, you'll never know which cigarette gave you the cancer" while holding a photo of her late grandmother, was inspirational in my quitting. It really is a game of suicidal Russian roulette.
The only part of lung function that cannot be restored is the elasticity of the lung tissue. This is due to the scarring caused by smoking. However, regular exercise, hydrating with pure water and eating fresh, real foods, including apples as mentioned earlier, will go a long way to improving your lung health. Deep belly breaths, correctly done several times a day, will also prove itself in short order.
Keeping healthy requires work and dedication but if you make it a habit it won't become a chore.
Good luck.
