I had an EKG at the hospital Emergency ward (for neck and arm pain) and on it there was a dip when it's supposed to go up (according to the doc), so on the top of the report it says "Left Arterial Enlargement". I've had 2 of these now that showed the same thing. The hospital let me go and said everything was fine but my doc wants me to see a cardiologist now that she's read the report. I have not had an ultrasound or any other tests except blood and urine related to heart enzymes etc.
Do any of you have this? Do you know if it's a big deal? I do have an appointment with a cardiologist but it's a ways out and just wanted to know if anyone knows about this. I'm anxious as my appointment is the day before I leave for 6 months down south.
Thanks in advance

Are they saying it's an aneurysm ? When a vein or artery enlarges, it hurts! It could be a big deal...but might not be....wait till you get checked out....just take care of yourself until you see the doctor!!!
Get to that cardiologist. The left atrium is the part of the heart that receives oxygen rich blood from the lungs. Generally, atrial enlargement is caused by increased pressure in the left atrium. The question is what is causing that extra pressure.

I have an appointment but it's 3 weeks out and for the day before I leave to go south for 6 months...do you think an ECG is enough to tell you it's bad? At Emergency the doc didn't seem worried at all.

This is why you should have tried to focus on discussing your problem with your doctor rather than trying to read or see your ECG. First of all, it's Atrial, not Arterial. (I am not criticizing but simply pointing it out. Given your lack of familiarity with medical vocabulary, it is an easy miss.)
LAE is relatively common that does not require any intervention. It is associated with Atrial Fibrillation but that would have showed up on ECG as well. Good History and physical can also rule out Heart failure or Mitral stenosis which are also associated. Finally, sleep apnea is another possibility if you are obese and you snore at night.
My prediction is that you will get an (useless) cardiac echo and yearly Cardiology follow up (if he is unscrupulous).

I did not get to discuss it with the doctor, I was in the Emergency ward and afterward my doc's referral person (she works in a team) called me and said I needed to see a cardiologist because of an irregularity and then she told me what it was - I was in shock, and know nothing about hearts (a poster above cleared up the name for me).
Why is an echo useless? And why would a follow up be unscrupulous (because it's so common?)? I don't understand.
Thanks for your reply.
