My dh had a heart attack. When I called 911, the first thing they asked was is there any aspirin in the house? Yes, we had some....thank goodness! When the paramedics arrived, they asked how much aspirin I had given him, I told them 8 81 mg pills, which was exactly correct. 8 x 81 = 641, which is the equivalent of 2 regular 325 mg aspirin. He survived the heart attack.

Right after that, I bought several small bottles of the Bayer aspirin for heart. Its 325 mg each, and is micro fine for quicker absorption. I keep one bottle in my purse, he has one at work, one in both cars, one in the bedside drawer, and one in the bathroom and kitchen. I've also told the kids about it and showed them---it has a little heart symbol on it---give daddy 2 and call 911 if he says he has heart pains!

I also change them out every year---the pills, not the kids---I just remember the anniversary of his heart attack and buy 8 new bottles and throw away the old ones. It is the first line of defense, and really isn't going to hurt anything......

BTW, does the OP know there are keychains that have little cylinders for medicine? My dh carries his nitro in one, its easy to carry and you're sure not to forget! I believe you could fit a few aspirin in them, or perhaps they have them for aspirin, check around!

Check with your doctor - there is an increased risk of some kinds of strokes so you don't want to take even baby aspirin "just because". If your doc okays it, you should take it every day - it's not just for if/when you have chest pains - maybe she's thinking of nitroglycerin? It is worse to start and stop taking aspirin than to just take it steadily - your doc should be able to explain it. But - stop using "carrying it around" as an excuse - either take it daily or not.

But, she isn't nagging you about taking them everyday..BUT only to carry them. As a now retired ER nurse..and know full well that those aspirarines could very well be life saving in the end..But if it's about not liking your wife nagging ...then I suggest you make sure your estate is in order..because your next "Heart Attack" could be your last one.. I won't even bother with Heart Attacks occur whenever and wherever you happen to be..Could be a long time to get EMT's to you!!

I'm betting too..Your Cardiologist has ALREADY advised you of this !!!!!!!!

Yep..or just wanting to start conversation about it...AS a Frontline retired ER nurse..It's something that can make the difference..especially post Heart Attack..His Doctor no doubt already advised him of this!!!!

No need LOL..Baby aspirins melt in your month..chewable or sublingual available over the counter!!! Also suggest purchase smallest amt. available..expired one's may not be potent enough to achieve desired levels..and make you to tel EMT or ER how much was taken!! Just be sure BABY or Regular ASA 81mg versus 325mg...8 baby and 2 adult... Also label with dosages/#in bottle, since unconsciousness may be a factor

Wife attendance really shouldn't be necessary..It's likely she has already been there when Cardiologist said it to both of them!! Never mind..It's common knowledge !!
BBM~~
It's either that..or OP is just trying to start a conversations about it

My cardiologist prescribed me nitroglycerin pills to carry around. They are in a small bottle and go under the tongue for emergency use only.
I was told to take 1/2 regular aspirin at bedtime each night as a regular routine. Nitro pills for emergency use only. If you carry aspirin around and have an attack an are not conscience how are you going to take the pill. With the nitro pills someone can administered them for you under the tongue if necessary. They dissolve/work very quickly. Aspirin does not if you are unconscious and can't swallow.
Best recommendation is to talk to your cardiologist for what they want you to do.

garytwoshoe Congratulations! You married a very good wife! She is right, aspirin is a wonder drug. I can understand carrying a whole bottle in your pocket is a pain, so just carry a couple -- they are not likely to disintegrate -- and replace them when you need to. And if you are supposed to carry the Nitro around, do it.

If you are not aware, hospitals are rated by the service they give. If they do not give a full strength aspirin to every person who comes in with possible heart attack, they are downgraded and their save rate (how many live after admittance for heart trouble) goes down. Good EMT services, all give an Aspirin to the person they are called to take care of if a heart problem is suspected. A baby Aspirin is simply too low dose to help, especially potential strokes.

According to my Cardiologists (4 different heart specialists/heart surgeon) and Internist tell me that Baby Aspirin is not enough. They demand I use full strength. Especially to prevent strokes.

Any older person, or any one with a possible heart problem or potential stroke victim, is ordered to take one full strength aspirin every morning. They say this is the best prevention for both heart attacks and strokes.

Our hall table has a bottle of Aspirin in it, in case I have any problem, when I will take one immediately.

You can do what you want, but me I take my Aspirin and keep a bottle in the living room and in the cars, just in case I feel problems coming on, and need to take an Aspirin to keep things under control. I have been doing it for 15 years and it has kept the problems away. My first Cardiologist is one of the top men in the country. Only sees patients two days a week, and the rest of the time he is involved with Surgery. At a major hospital, his personal practice office is just outside the Cardiology wing. You never see him in anything but scrubs. He told me, to take my Aspirin daily, and keep them handy if a problem begins to come up, or expect to see him over an operating table. I prefer the Aspirin a day, and carry emergency Aspirin.

What you do is up to you. It appears that your wife has talked to your doctors, or done heavy research and would like to keep you alive and healthy. That is the reason she insists on the Aspirin. Kind of like mine. I am healthy and 84 years old, and I know beyond a doubt that if I had not listened to the specialists as I have, I would probably not have made 70.

How about Nitroglycerin? Your doctor could prescribe that for you.
