My wife was in an automotive accident earlier this year and the end results was a rather large operation that put a spinal fusion cage in her back. She is looking for others that are in the same position as she is in, and would like to make contact. There are no forums to actively discuss this topic and she is starting to feel alone. I feel if she had other people like her that could discuss spinal fusion and the things they can and can not do, she would feel better about it.
So please stop in and leave a small message, if there are enough people interested my wife is going to make her own account. She is feeling rather discouraged and could use some comparable and experience friends to communicate with.

I've had three lumbar fusions and one cervical fusion and about to get another cervical fusion. Eventually you get better. Pain pills are very helpful and if trying to get through the aftermath without them is detrimental to recovery and feeling of wellness.
She did not like Spine health very much. They do not discuss often and more share their initial story and that is about it. She wants to be able to talk about what you can and can not do. Most posts over there are complaints from what she is telling me.
I had a "heavy duty" spinal fusion -- six vertebrae in the area between the shoulder blades (which involved 8 weeks nearly totally immobilized in a head-to-knees body cast, and traction) at the age of 10 -- 55+ years ago. For fifty years thereafter, there were no problems to speak of, but the non-fused portion of the lower back is starting to kink -- probably because of the tendency to shrink as we age, and I get occasional sciatic pain, which varies between several locations and is aggravated when I spend more time on my feet (at age 66, I still work part-time or part-year). My balance is changing, and descending stairs is a little more challenging -- because one of my legs is slightly longer, thicker and heavier due to a slight tilt of my pelvis.
I'm told that the prognosis is a crapshoot -- in part because the treatment of scoliosis has changed over the years, and the future was even more unpredictable in an earlier day. I hear occasional stories of people in constant pain, but mine usually stops within a few minutes after I'm off my feet. Given the fifty years of good health and mobility I experienced after the procedure, I don't feel that I have that much to complain about.
I had spinal fusion surgery for severe scoliosis when I was 14, back in the mid 1980s. There are a lot of adult women (and some men) who had spinal fusions when they were young. Your wife could try looking into the scoliosis forums that are online, to see if anyone there is chatting about fusions in adults. I'm sure there must be. The fusions are done for a different reason, but the impact would be pretty similar, I'd think.
type in on google ....spinal fusion testimonies.....there's loads of forums with people like her who're sharing their experiences.
