Has anyone ever had their thyroid gland regrow after surgery? I had surgery about 6 years ago for what turned out to be a benign tumor. I was on 200 mcg of synthroid initially. Over the years, the amount has been reduced until I am now on 88 mcg. I am going in for tests.

Any advice would be appreciated.

google is your friend:

Glands grow: If not all of the thyroid was removed, the remnant will likely grow back, especially if the TSH was slightly high or normal (tsh is a stimulus to growth). Surgery usually does not remove every last cell of the thyroid, even if it is called a "total thyroidectomy.

I have a friend that had thyroid cancer and thyroidectomy in 99. In 2007, her doctor discovered that it had grown back, among other complications (the original surgeon left staples in the wound, to name one). They did no radiation. In April of 08, she had her 2nd thyroid removed. They told her she could have radiation, but didn't recommend as they had gotten all of the tissue and there was no cancer detected in the latest thyroid. Last week, at her follow-up sonogram (?) the doctor discovered that again, the thyroid had regrown, this time, there are 2 1" growths on either side.

I had my thyroid irradiated ( dx of hyperthyroid) about 20 years ago. Took Synthroid for 5 years until I gave birth to my daughter. They took me off Synthroid immediately after her birth and I didn't need any supplement for about 20 years until recently.

What I understand is that hormonal changes can affect thyroid function as well as many other factors.

Good luck getting it stabilized, it is amazing that one small gland can affect so many of our bodily functions!

Good to know it can grow back if some of it was left behind. I had a TT on 2/16 so now I know to keep my doctor on his toes about it. Luckily I had no cancer, just quite a few nodules and Hashimoto's.

Good news. Got an ultrasound of my entire neck. Everything was normal. My thyroid is growing back. Some of the tissue was left after surgery. My doctor is going to follow up with me in 3 months. Bad part - I will be getting stuck for blood work every 3 months for the next year!

I am taking the lowest dosage of Synthroid. The doctor said the total gland may never regrow. I am content with what I have!
