So 5 days ago I fractured my right fibula when stepping off of a ladder (right foot rolled inwards). I was in an Ortho-Glass stent for two days and now I’m in a walking boot, although I’m still told not to put any weight on my foot. Initially the swelling was like a large egg over my ankle bone, and while that has seemed to decrease, the swelling seems to have spread over my whole foot. I try to keep my foot elevated, but it’s not easy with that heavy boot.
How long does it typically take swelling to go down from broken bones?
The best way to elevate it is to get a big foam wedge with a non slip cover. The kind they sell for couples, like the liberator ramp, or something cheaper that's the same size and density.

Are you permitted to take the boot off as long as you are elevating it and not trying to put weight on it? Chilling your foot while its elevated helps swelling too. Chill for 20 minutes, let it warm up for a while, chill again. Everyone's different. Each injury is different. Hard to predict.

I was told only to remove the boot for bathing. I did wake up at 3am this morning with it aching, so I made a bucket of ice water, removed the boot and soaked my foot in it for about ten minutes. That seemed to relieve it enough so that I could go back to sleep.
Oddly, it doesn’t hurt that bad during the day while laying around on the sofa, but it starts to late at night while I’m in the bed.
