Look, the chances from contracting HIV from an infected female in the first world through unprotected vaginal sex is about 1 in 2500. Now take out hookers and drug addicts and the number goes to about 1 in 10,000. Finally, take out the black community and you're sitting at about 1 in 35,000.
For a male, having only vaginal sex, the chances of contracting HIV from an HIV positive female are actially very very low. Mod cut.
Here's a very interesting article about transmission rates:
With regards to africa, HIV is transmitted through breaks milk as well and many HIV positive babies are a result of this. Additionally the medical care and screening process that exist here do not exist there. Only about 35% of HIV cases are sexually transmitted.
It's not just STD's that condoms protect against - it's unwanted pregnancy. Both are completely unacceptable to me. I've always worn condoms, and always will. Even older women can get pregnant; sure, after a certain age the likelihood is much slimmer - but, it's still possible.
Yes, condoms are not 100% effective 100% of the time. But, if they don't have any tears/holes & if you put them on properly, they do decrease your chances of having an issue (either STD's or unwanted pregnancy).
Condoms, always. The odds might be low but I don't want to take that risk.
It's not just HIV that has me worried - there is a strain of "super gonorrhoea" making the rounds in the UK. Doctors fear that it might be untreatable in the future as this strain is developing resistance to antibiotics.
My friend is a sexual health nurse, and she will often tell me stories about her days at work. Nasty.
By the way, a lot of the people she treats for STIs/STDs were in committed relationships and got infected because their partner cheated.

Mod cut: reply to comment which has been deleted. I'm arguing that any form of unprotected sex carries the risk of acquired infection. Remember, before the hiv positive babies came the hiv positive parents. Being from Africa, I know for a fact that most people became hiv positive through PIV sex. That is a fact!
As many folks as I have heard tell they have some sort of STD, I'd say it's easy-- especially if the partner is like those folks I've heard confess they caught something. Too many will tell others they have something, but they won't tell their sexual partners! Absolutely nutso, and how stuff gets so easily passed around.
Mod cut.
