Synvisc, Orthovisc, Supartz, and Hyalgan are derived from rooster combs. The difference between the two is Synvisc is chemically modified to increase its molecular weight. Hyalgan is not. It’s thought that formulations with higher molecular weight are closer to the molecular weight and elasticity of the natural lubricants in the joints of young people.
The other products on the market such as Euflexxa, Orthovisc, are made from bacterial cells. These products wee developed because some people have sensitivities or allergies to bird or chicken products.
