Lactose intolerance is a built in genetic mechanism in Asians that comes from generations of not consuming dairy after nursing as a toddler. But as a specie, humans are not meant to consume dairy after a certain age and we are all originally lactose intolerant. No other specie drinks milk after nursing. However, this may all evolve in time.

Western culture has a different history as milk and cheese was a primary source of protein after nursing due to lack of available meat proteins (dairy was widely available, it was cheap, cheese could be aged, and didn't spoil) . There was a similar situation in Asia, but instead of dairy, they resorted to soy based proteins. Soy milk, soy tofu, fermented aged soy miso, soy sauce, etc.

The biggest difference is in health of the two cultures.

That dairy is categorized as an essential food group is incorrect, and mostly political (Dairy industry). The Japanese have the highest avg lifespan in the world, and eat very low quantities of dairy.

However, I agree with many of the posts here. Ice cream, cheese, dairy based desserts are absolutely delicious!

People weren't as into milk historically? On what planet is that; not earth. Milk, cheese, and yogurt have existed as staples in many cultures for all of human history.

The mutations for lactose tolerance in adults have happened twice, once in Northern Europe and once in Africa. They are not the same mutation, but they function the same. The European mutation happened in the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age, and has spread to most European populations. The African mutation is more recent. There is a marked survival benefit to drinking milk, because cows, sheep, etc. can subsist on coarse vegetation that will not nourish humans. By drinking milk, the humans made it through times of famine without starving. Those who were lactose intolerant died, which is why the gene is so widespread.

Asians generally lose their lactase in late childhood, but cultures like the Mongols used milk by fermenting it to destroy the sugars. All you need to remove the lactose is a healthy yeast culture.

1). you're either vegan or not (not very vegan). If you consume very little animal products, your diet should be said to be "plant-based".
2). Cow's milk is for baby cows, which means you as a human should consume none of it.
3). Dairy cows go through very miserable lives for american's consumption of their milk (search on youtube.
4). human consumption of cows milk has been linked to type 1 diabetes and like other animal products, various cancers

search youtube for nutritionfacts.org for short science-based videos made by an MD

I have to say, I have truly never understood this argument. By this line of reasoning, nothing that a human eats (other than human breast milk) can be said to be "for a human":

Eggs are for making baby birds.

Honey is for the survival of a bee hive.

Meat is muscles that animals need to move around.

Seeds and fruits are for making new plants.

Vegetables (leaves, roots, stems) are parts of plant that it needs to survive.

Clearly, people need to eat, so everyone ignores at least some of these facts. You might argue that one or more of the above are not healthful foods for one scientific reason or another, or you might claim that some are morally or ethically questionable. But to say a certain food is "not for humans" is a specious argument.

Why did they have to stop? Do none of the stores in your area sell lactase?

Dairy is a great source of good protein and fat. While I don't personally drink a lot of milk because of the high sugar content, I enjoy tons of cheese, cream, butter, and whey and casein protein powder.

At the end of the day as long as you get your macros in, who cares where they come from? There are more important dietary things to worry about.

I eat dairy in a few forms and enjoy it but its true as others have suggested humans are the only mammals who think they never need to be weaned.
