Laser, based on what I read, is nothing but bull**** that doesn't work.
is overrated and there is no research supporting that it works, also expensive. I read bad reviews about it on realself.com, where real people post reviews about procedures
Laser does work... at least it did for me.
To this day I don't know how I got the fungus. It was on the big toe on my left foot. The nail bed was completely brown. It never spread to any other toes and I didn't do anything with it for over 3 years. One day I saw a local laser treatment for sale on Groupon... $149. I bought one. I went and got the treatment done and the nail SLOWLY started to improve as it grew out. Over the next 6 months I got 3 more treatments every 2 months for a total of 4.
My nail is completely healthy now... no fungus, no signs of the fungus... and if you looked at it you'd never be able to tell that I once had a fungus issue.
It cost me $600 over 8 months...but laser most definitely does work.

The sad truth is that it takes time for nails to grow out, and most people don't have the patience to stick with a treatment.
Exactly. The fungus has to be destroyed at the spores and laser does that... but it still takes time to grow out healthy tissue. I am quite pleased with the results. It's been over a year now and the fungus HAS NOT come back.

Hubby has something in his body which does not respond to any exterior methods. He also gets a few pink spots on his chest that will not go away. If it is treated with a prescription cream it goes away for awhile, but then returns. I am sure this and the toenail fungus, which looks like a gray tinge on a few toes, are the same thing. He has considered taking the pill, but the side effects sound worse than the ailment.

Wow, I would be much, much more worried about a fungal infection that may have spread to other parts of his body (maybe even attacking internal organs) than most side effects that usually occur in a very, very small percentage of the people taking the medication.

No, he's had it for years and it hasn't gotten worse, or spread. All his doctors have seen it.
I did the Lamisil treatment and never looked back. Just make sure they check your liver function during treatment. Everything else is a joke. Sorry for the bad news, but I tried them all. It is generic now and not expensive at all.
I had always thought that my feet were allergic to leather as the entire foot that touch the shoe was slightly red and scaly and I had a slight discoloration on my toe nails. Sometimes the skin on my heels would get thick and then crack & bleed. My feet looked horrible in sandals. I had this for several years, perhaps as many as 6 or 8 years.. I mentioned this several times to two different general practitioners neither were very concerned and said that I had dry skin or an allergic reaction to shoe leather or to shoe dyes.
Finally, my toe nails started to get more discolored & very funny looking so I went to a specialist. The doctor laughed when I said that I was "allergic to shoe leather" and said "No, you have a toe nail fungus".
I took Lamisil for the specified period of time. The toe nail infection disappeared and the red, scaly-ness on my feet disappeared. This was 15 or 20 years ago and I never had another problem again. My toe nails are perfect and the skin on my feet is perfect. I never again had dry or cracked/bleeding heels. I deeply regret that I did not go to a specialist sooner.
BTW, I did not have any side effects from the medication.

Nah... everything else (like the laser treatment I mentioned upthread that worked for me) is just more expensive.
No side effects and no need to check liver function... just the possibility of a warm toe while the treatment is in process.

Your avatar reminds me of one of my favorite cures: Clorox! Here is one link: Will Clorox Kill Toenail Fungus? | eHow. I have used Clorox on all kinds of problems; like poison ivy. That link also states to: "You should speak to your physician before trying any home remedies for fungus infections." They do use a dilution and not full strength.
I've been fighting this fight for a few months now, after I finally realized what it was (it had also started to come up on another toe on the same foot). I thought, when it was just my big toe, that I had just injured my toenail (I had scratched it right before the fungus started growing). So, it's probably been going on close to a year now.
I tried apple cider vinegar soaks, Vick's Vapo-Rub, and tea tree oil (all at the same time!). None of that worked. I finally just bought some Equate antifungal liquid (maximum strength, undecyclenic acid, "compare to Fungi Nail") and started apply it a couple of times a day, making sure to get behind the nail, covering the top of the nail, and even applying to the skin a bit on the sides and bottom. It seems to be working. The ugly part is growing off and no white or yellow spots (mine were actually pink) have reappeared below. I will report back in another few months if I can remember.
FWIW, my daughter took an oral antifungal for a ringworm infection that did not respond to topical medication and she had no side effects. She didn't take it for months, though, just seems like maybe 2 or 3 weeks...and I think it was Diflucan, not Lamisil or Sporanox.
