You always hear this from someone who read it online or some forums/website. They repeat this mantra like parrots. "Antibiotics don't work for sinus infections caused by viruses. Most sinus infections are viral"
First of all, viruses do not cause sinus infections. Bacteria does.
Sinusitis, all it means, is that your sinuses have become inflamed, not infected. The sinuses don't get infected by viruses, instead, the viruses of the cold and flu may cause the sinuses to become inflamed, and if you have a predisposition or physiology, which makes you prone to sinus inflammation, such as having Polyps, deviated septum, allergic rhinitis, etc. Your sinuses will get inflamed, which causes all the symptoms of sinusitis, which are head pain, pressure, etc. In most cases, this always results in a bacterial infection, due all the mucus and blockage, creating a perfect ground for bacteria to multiply.
The virus did not infect your sinuses, it infected your nose. You blowing your nose is what causes the pressure and mucus buildup in your sinuses, which results in a bacteria infection. This is what people don't understand. You don't have to blow your nose at all. It will only make you more prone to having sinusitis. You also, shouldn't be using Mucinex (guafeineisen). People use it, thinkging it will loosen the mucus and help sinus inflammation, it won't. All this med does, is to draw fluid to your trachea, bronchi and sinuses. This is good if you have a cough, but not for sinusitis. You already have blockage, mucus and volume up there, and Mucixen will increase the volume, making it worse, exacerbating the head and sinus pain/pressure due to the extra volume
Shouldn't be using allergy meds either. Shouldn't be using decongestants. Shouldn't be using a Neti Pot or nasal irrigation, it will only propel all the bacteria and mucus into the sinuses, producing, even more buildup and infection. Once it becomes a bacterial infection, only antibiotics will help it. Yes, it may improve on its on, but it may not go away completely.
Amoxicillin is the drug of choice. It works. It has worked for me every single time.
