Any geezers here have both of their pneumonia vaccines? I got one about 6 or 7 years ago but unsure whether it was PCV13 which was introduced around that time, or the older PPSV23.

A bigger question is whether two are needed. My primary has never mentioned a word about a 2nd pneumonia injection for geezers. I learned about it by talking to a pharmacist and of course the reference below.

Next MD appt. in Nov. but in the meantime, what do your docs say?

I dont know if I quality as a geezer, but I got both vaccinations -- the first one about 4 years ago and the 2nd one last year. My doctor, whose knowledge I respect tremendously, recommended them both.

I think there are threads on this subject.

The Prevnar 13 was added just two years ago, August 2014. I had it. If you've had neither, Prevnar 13 is recommended first, and the PPSV23 recommended 6-12 months later. I can have my PPSV any time now; due for physical in Feb., will probably get it then.

If you meet certain income requirements and have no insurance you may be able to get the vaccine free.

Prevnar:

Pneumovax 23:

If you have insurance it should be covered at no or very little out of pocket cost.

It is covered under Part B Medicare with no out of pocket cost.

OK, thanks for that info. I thought I read somewhere that the 13 came out in 2010.

I was shot in either '09 or '10, so it must have been the 23 version.

Prevnar13 came out in 2010 for infants; it replaced the Prevnar7.

It's about 99% certain you had PPSV23. You can still get the other.

Ah ha, the brave little bambinos got it first, and if they survived, they figured it was safe for those of us in the geezy demographic.

Ha! Actually, the PCV7 came out for babies in 2000. I actually gave the first dose in my clinic!
