I've had this problem a few times and it causes swelling of the eyelid.

I've tried three different oral antibiotics (one was clindamycin) and they helped little or not at all.
I also used an erythromycin ointment and I'm not sure if it helped. It's also hard to get it into my eye.

In all cases, I'm not sure if the treatments helped. The problem might have gone away if I'd just done nothing. It usually lasts 4-5 days. Putting a hot towel helps a small amount and only temporarily.

What's your experience with having this problem - have you ever taken no action and it went away?
It might be like cold sores on my gum. I just ignore them and they go away.

Did you see a doctor? Could it be pink eye?

I had irritated eyelids and one eyelid became infected and very swollen, Dr. prescribed eye drops and antibiotic and it cleared up.

Dr. told me to wash my eyelids with baby shampoo. Washes away the germs or whatever irritants to prevent reinfection. Since doing this I haven't had any more trouble with my eyelids in the last 6 years since the initial infection. Can't hurt to try this.

Good luck.

Which antibiotics and which eye drops were they?

The problem is diminishing, except that the swelling is huge when I get up. Then it goes down after I take a shower.

Try a "warm as you can stand it" regular tea bag, wet but not dripping.

The antibiotic was a cephalosporin. Can't remember what the eye drops were. I remember the Dr asking if I had prescription coverage because the eyedrops cost @ $60 without insurance. Probably cost more now. Sorry, it was 6 years ago. Lucky I can remember that much.

I get swollen eyelids, too. I have an anti-biotic ointment for eyes I use...and the doctor has me using a 5-/50 mix of baby shampoo/water to "clean" my eyelids....the meobian glands get clogged up.....and that actually caused a lump on one lid that took almost a year to go away!

Definitely warm compresses will help!

Could it be a Sty? My eyelids always swell when I have a sty. You could usually see a bump under the eyelid if it is. There is over the counter stuff you can get, but in a few days it's typically gone.
