I had my procedure done at 28 after the birth of my 3rd child. Best decision I ever made!!! I was wide awake through the procedure. My tubes were cauterized, so I did feel a weird pinching pain. Also, I did start per-menopause in my mid-30s. I was fully done with menopause (12 month thing) by 45 years old. I'm not sure if the procedure was related to me going through early menopause.
Well, I did have an IV drip with demerol. But yes, I was wide awake. No crazy pain whatsoever, just pressure from the gas and the pinching sensation when the tubes were cauterized.
The reason doctors discourage young, unmarried folks (male and female) from being sterilized is because they do see people who have it done and then do regret it later. Even married folks sometimes regret having it done. I know a woman, a doctor's wife no less, who wished she had not been sterilized - after she had five children. She did not want to get pregnant, she just wanted to have the option to do so.
Younger age at the time of the procedure is strongly correlated with regret.
In addition, there are now many highly effective methods of contraception that are reversible.
At least men who wish to be sterilized have the option of banking sperm as insurance if they change their minds later about becoming fathers.

I already have menstrual issues, so they couldn't get any worse for me. I will be forever be on birth control for that until menopause happens. I'm hoping I get to start menopause early since I started my period early haha.
I've read the studies and they show it at 2.4 to 20% and even 20% is by that high. You got another 80% that don't regret it. I would rather have an 80% to a 20%. I can see where doctors come from, however it's my choice as an adult. I should be able to make a choice on my own without someone telling me I could or would change my mind. Only I know my mindset.

IVF is currently the procedure most fertility specialists suggest after tubal sterilization, but it is expensive and often not covered by insurance. For some, adoption is not a consideration. If they change their minds about sterilization it is because they want a child with their partner.
I had a tubal at age 32. No discomfort at all...I had it done on a Friday and went to work Monday. This was when my youngest was 9 months old, and we decided to stop at two kids. No regrets on the decision. It's been almost 25 years.
Oldest daughter is now contemplating it...she has two sons, and wants to leave it at that. I advised her to take more time to think about it, though. Her DH is opting for a vasectomy first. They had originally planned on "one and done". Her DH was told he was low sperm count and had only a miniscule chance of getting her pregnant...after years of trying and no success, oldest grandson was the product of a sperm donor. Then surprise surprise...two years later she became pregnant again. Turns out he's not so infertile after all. You hear about that happening a lot.
I'd like to see her leave her options open to a third child if she should change her mind...she's only in her early 30's. Even if her DH goes ahead and has the vasectomy, there are two more "doses" of sperm frozen from my oldest grandson's donor.
I wanted to update with how my visit went. She listened to what I had to say, let me read my research and she took the letters of support that I had gotten to read over. My mom came with me and she asked her what she thought of everything and my mom was super supportive.
She is going to read over the letters and think about agreeing to do the tubal. She didn't say no which was great. She said she will let me know soon. I'm having my IUD and hysterscopy done on March 24 as planned and if she agrees to the tubal she said we can schedule it for a later date.
I was happy she just didn't shut me down right away and let me talk.
I know it's been awhile since I posted this. I just wanted to update everyone and I was FINALLY approved to have my tubes tied. My doctor now is on board and feels comfortable doing the surgery. It's an early Christmas present to me!
Your questions are quite intrusive and personal in addition to the fact that the experience for one will not be your experience. Go to your doctor and discuss this issue with them to find out all of your medical options. Your doctor is better qualified to help guide you than random strangers on a public forum.
I don't think so, getting real world experience is great. truthfully it is one of the good things about the net. I know op is not substituting her doctors advice with the internet but she may get some advice she can discuss with him.
Op, I had my tubes tied when I was 30. we had 3 kids and I knew without a doubt no more babies were coming from this womb. lol.
No real discomfort for me. I think I was a bit stiff in the joints the next day but after that, nothing. lol I remember complaining that I couldn't stay out of work longer.
my next few periods were very heavy but by month 5 I was fine.
