prescription drug residues in our drinking water...
AP probe finds drugs in drinking water - Yahoo! News (broken link)
this is very worrisome. Especially the fact that we get doses of hormones in our drinking water. I wonder how this is impacting fertility problems and cancer? Even though it is in small doses, it's a constant small dose and small children are already exposed to this.

At our Household Hazardous Waste facility, they will now accept expired, unused or unwanted over the counter and non-controlled prescription medications for disposal so that they DON'T end up being flushed down the toilet. The only drugs they won't accept are controlled substances. They refer you to DEA website for instructions on how to dispose of those. That website is Drug Enforcement Agency Redirect page

HUmmm, I never thought about that. I always dumped mine loose in the garbage, NEVER putting the pills in the container in there, they would go in different trash bags even and I made sure there was a lot of nasty stuff in them.

A lot of the drugs just end up in the water because they go through our bodies and are excreted with our urine and stools. Yikes.

I'm sure a lot of it has to do that we've always been told to flush unused medications down the toilet.

That was a very disturbing article. I wonder if any of the water filters on the market are able to filter drugs?

I find it horrifying. Imagine the impact of this on childrens' little bodies (not to mention our own!) year after year. Plus who knows what else is in there we don't know about?!
I occasionally buy distilled water, as many "alternative" health practitioners suggest, but from here on out it will be on my regular shopping list.

So true as it's not just vitamins that come out in our urine. Sad that they are finding these in the Rivers and Oceans now as eventually the waste from sewer systems makes it's way into these and the Oceanic Plants/Animals.
A little off topic ....but when i was in the Navy when we were moored to the docks you could look over the side and see the sea crabs swimming and people fishing for them and yet we always were having minor oil spills in the water and you could see the crabs swim in it and it made me wonder these people catching them and eating them what was in the meat they were eating (oil, grease etc..)...
