Different people derive success from quitting smoking by different means, for me the motivation was when the price of a pack of cigarettes went up to $10 a pack combined with a shortness of breath and a burning in the mouth sensation when smoking,it was time, so after 40 years of smoking i smoked my last cigarette, i used nicotine lozenges for about 6 months to help me bury that disgusting habit, August 2 it will be 10 years since that last cigarette.
By all means try the acupuncture it may work for you.

You are so right: I am not at the 10 year mark, but getting there. It will be 9 years for me in Dec. I can't believe it. I quit for many reasons: of course health was one: the smell of tobacco was starting to bother me and of course the cost. I quit when the got to about $5 a pack. At the time I was only smoking a few a day. As I mentioned I simply did it cold turkey. When hubby quit back in the 80s, he too quit cold turkey, but he started crewing gum as a replacement and still does. It drives me nuts!!!!
Nicotine replacement therapy is a real help,i recommend using it until you are thoroughly done with the cravings, took me 6 months before i got sick of nicotine lozenges i then quit that.
With cigarette smoking cessation ultimately you have to smoke your last cigarette ,why cant that next cigarette be that last one?
Nicotine patches were the only thing that worked for me. Screw cold turkey. Better living through modern chemistry is my mantra. I think acupuncture is mind over matter. If you believe it will work, it will. But nicotine replacement actually gives you the nicotine, which is the substance your body is addicted to. The odd thing is, nicotine itself is not very harmful to your health. It is addictive, but not deadly. The carcinogens that are used to press the tobacco together and that is emitted from the cigarette when it is lit is what will put you in the grave. Good luck! Millions of former smokers and nonsmokers wish you success. Not smoking will give you a freedom you haven't had in years.
I have had acupuncture done over 100 times in my life.
So you're a pro already! You made me calmer when I think about the procedure, thank you!
Thank all of you for the replies. I think I am ready to try it. The only thing left is to find someone good that will understand my fear. I have high hopes! Thanks!

I have so many holes in my head!
Acupuncture is a strange thing to explain. I was SO nervous about my first time. I kept thinking, "WHAT am I doing? I pass out when I get blood drawn! Why am I doing this if I don't HAVE to?" The first session was odd. After the needles were inserted, the practitioner left me on the cot for about a half hour. At first I thought that it was nuts. What are you supposed to do for 30 minutes when you have little needles sticking out everywhere? But then I started feeling so relaxed and then actually euphoric. You know when you're laughing about nothing and you kind of feel like you should repress it so people don't think you're a crazy person? I got that.
Good luck to you, Sall. I think having the desire to quit for good is the first step, so you're already on your way to success.

Talking about trading one for the other...although gum is a greater tradeoff. When I got involved in AA and Alanon over the last decade or so, the rooms were filled with coffee drinkers and sugar snackers...cig smoking outside.
When my sil quite when his first child was born, he got to chewing pumpkin seeds...never without bags of pumpkin seeds, but again better than cigs. BUT, sadly cancer had different plans for him. He's missed her high school grad and see her entering college. sigh...
Hubby & I were going to try it. We had the appointment, smoked our last cig right before the said appointment. I was EXTREMELY nervous because I never had acupuncture before and I have an acute case of needle-itis. I'm pacing waiting for the appointment. And waiting, and waiting and waiting. I think we were there for about a half hour and left. We stopped at the first store to buy a pack of cigs.
A few days later, she calls and said that she lost her appointment book. She offered to give us a free session. We opted out.
I don't know how long after we tried Chantix. Man, that was a nightmare. Hubby had bad dreams and I wanted to gnaw the legs off of the furniture. I was on it long enough for the initial stop. After I stopped the Chantix, I did have a few withdrawal symptoms but I got through it. That was 2007. I can't say that I haven't smoked since because I do cheat once in a while (maybe one cig a week-if that much). But, I don't inhale. If I did, I would be back to a pack and a half a day.
I did go to acupuncture after that for other things-TMJ, hot flashes, & tinnitus. The only thing it really worked for was the TMJ.
