I got shingles at age 42. My insurance company covered the vaccine at age 50, not 60 - I kept asking every year!

There is a theory that all the kids who are now getting chicken pox vaccinations rather than having the disease won't get shingles since they won't have the dormant virus in their system. It will take many decades to see how that plays out though for my kid's sake, I certainly hope he never has to worry about shingles. It was a singularly unpleasant experience, esp. because I was in the elite group of people who had shingles in my eye.

My parents just paid out of pocket.

Sorry to hear about your daughter Jo. I don't know but one person who has had shingles and she was probably about 70 and I know it was stress induced as she has just gotten a puppy and was "trying" to train it and was up and down all night with it crying.

I've had my share of stress and my daughter too, but escaped it and no vaccines. I believe our supplements keep our immune system strong.

Everyone brought up all the salient points, but I am not hopeful.

I acquired shingles when I was 27. I had just overcome five weeks of hives which was a horrible nightmare lol. Not even three weeks after that is when the shingles hit. I was cleaning and hit my right forehead/eye area on a desk when I bent over. A few days later I had not only a slight bruise but blisters there and horrific pain. I thought I had a concussion, but in the ER they told me immediately it was shingles. I was put on Valtrex and it made me so ill I couldn't finish it. At that time in my life I had just gotten a new job and moved out of a halfway house (for alcohol abuse) and into my own apartment, so i am guessing my stress level lowered my immune system a bit.

I also had chicken pox when i was a little kid, which I have heard makes one more likely to get shingles?

The current shingles vaccine provides protection for about five years, and then slowly loses effectiveness thereafter. Hence, it is recommended for those 60 and over as shingles is more traumatic for older individuals. Presently, there is no booster vaccine, so it's a one and done. Perhaps a booster will be available in the future.

I cannot speak for nationwide, but in my state, with a physician's Rx, the shingles vaccine is available for ages 50-59.

I had shingles in my 30s, and now, 20 years later, opted against the vaccine for the present. Given its limited protection time and lack of a booster, I wouldn't want its effectiveness to wear off when I am barely 60.

Chickenpox is caused by the initial infection with varicella zoster virus. After you recover from the chickenpox, the virus remains inactive in your nerve cells.

In some people, it stays dormant forever. In others, the virus "wakes up" when disease, stress, or aging weakens the immune system. Some medicines may also trigger the virus to wake up and cause a shingles rash.

While it's good to get the shingles vaccine, remember the vaccine not 100% effective. In the key clinical trial, overall efficacy among people age 60 years and older was 51% and decreased with increasing age. However, the vaccine was 67% efficacious in preventing postherpetic neuralgia; this efficacy did not decrease with increasing age. The duration of protection from shingles after a dose of zoster vaccine appears to be less than 10 years.

B12 and Vit C and Lysine are mentioned here. I would add Grape Seed Extract, work to prevent it in the future. I take all the above and have taken Lysine over some yrs, not taking it now.
