I am currently seeing a doctor, trying to figure out what to do with me. I am currently on muscle relaxers and heat therapy. I originally sought help to control the constant urge to stretch and mild pain in arms and shoulders.

My sleep is also off. Sleepy during the day, and some days I do not get a restful night sleep.

Does a pinched nerve last forever? Would the condition cause problems on the arms and wrist? Could it be something else like fibro or cfs? Currently taking amrix.

It depends on the type of pinch. If it's due to a herniated disc it will more than likely not only last forever but continue to degenerate. I have two herniated discs in my neck, and it's been a battle for five years trying to avoid surgery. I use reverse neck traction and NSAIDs (with occasional use of steroids when called for) to keep the pain/swelling within reason. I continue to be mostly active and even lift weights in the gym, but there are times I can't do as much when the condition flairs.

Again, it would depend on where the condition originates from. In my case, I have numbing all the way to my thumb at times. The nerves travel throughout your body from your brain using various paths.

That'd probably be something to discuss with your doctor. Hopefully, you've had an MRI which can show where the issue is coming from, and they should be going from there in your treatment.

I had a lot of chiro and PT work on my shoulders and the right one was ALMOST frozen...this is from pulleys at the gym where I worked out for years. Prolotherapy in right shoulder gave me 3 yrs of pain relief. It all depends on what you are dealing with.

Moderator cut: edited inflammatory remark I've had 42 surgeries and I'm glad that I had each and every one of them. Mine are to do with arthritis.

Here's the deal on surgery. You are asleep, then when the surgery is over you get pain pills to help with the pain. In about a month you should feel almost 100%. Does that sound so bad. I just don't get why people are so afraid of surgery. Oh, get a really good surgeon.

I get pinched nerves pretty regularly (RA and FM), and use different ways to get rid of them: stretching/yoga, heat, TENS machine, muscle relaxers (not often), and my husband rubs out knots when I get them. Sometimes going to the gym and just working out the muscles where the pinched nerve is helps.

DH has pinched nerves, from a ATV accident, and surgery on the shoulder. He went to PT for it (and related problems, and I work on the sore spots to relieve the tension (use sports cream and massage oil), I use a thing that looks like a jack (from a game of jacks), it's hard plastic with different size rounded "spikes". My hands tire easily due to RA.

I have NOT met too many with good surgery results and then replacements. Shoulder and hip and knee. You are rare.

Yes, you are asleep and then wake up and the post op begins.

Moderator cut: edited reply to inflammatory remark To be honest, if you've had 42 surgeries you might be doing something wrong. I'm not having crippling pain, and as I said I'm still active and even lift heavy weights.

My experience tells me that surgery is not always the best option. I've had two ACL ruptures in both knees and had surgery on one when I was 30. The other was ruptured the next year, and I opted against surgery and quit playing basketball. The knee that was operated on is more troublesome than the other. I've heard tons of stories from people that never fully recover from back surgeries, and as long as my physician is on board I'm in no hurry to go under the knife for this condition.

I had a pinched nerve behind my knee two years ago. It took 4-5 months before it was 100% again, and that was with the first 2 months or so having my mobility pretty limited. Used a walker and a leg brace, and generally just limited how active I was. Couldn't work out, do any heavy lifting, etc. For reference, I was 38 at the time, and in pretty good shape for my age.

From my reading of post, I guess recovery is dependant on the patient.

I can't see myself on a pill diet. As it is now, with other issues, I have been having loose bowel movement everyday. So, another pill for diarrhea?! So now I take 8 pills a day.

I have better mobility in the warmer months, and feel flexible when doing light excercises. But now, excercises brings on more pain and soreness. Arthritis, stenosis, pinch nerve, tired and sore joints, all of them.

I have been ruled out on RA, and borderline false positive for Lyme disease. Low vitamin d , and sleep issues. The RA specialist is still trying to figure it out for me. Pinched nerve is all he is telling me.

It is nerve racking, the need to stretch for relief, every 1/2 hour or so. Swollen joints, and sore muscles. Can't sit or stand for so long. Can't work with these restrictions. Oh, and never ending neck stretches, it's an aggravation.

What kind of doctor diagnosed the pinched nerve? GP, osteo, neurologist, orthopedic or something else?
