I have a good friend who use to wake up grasping for air, and little did he know he was suffering from cardiomyopathy. Hard to say without any knowledge of the OP's physical condition (weight, age, etc). I think a heart condition is unlikely, and that apnea is the likely cause, but getting tested is the OP's priority.

This actually made me rethink whether or not I have avoided apnea by sleeping on my side. I have been so fatigued, it's like I'm drugged, no motivation, no nothing... and DH mentioned I was snoring on my side last night. Don't know why it never crossed my mind that my fatigue may be from apnea.

Happens to me every so often. I think it's normal, but if it keeps happening all the time, you might want to see a doctor.

Exclamation Diagnosed With Sleep Apnea

I had a sleep study done by a Specialist, and was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, but my insurance would cover very little from the $2,800 machine. Recently, I have stopped breathing while cooking, walking in the garden, sitting at a restaurant, etc. A week ago, I had such a strong one while sleeping, that my husband had to run to my room, and was scared to death. My issue is:

I have seen lots of CPAPS being advertised online, some of them without prescription, that I wonder, if it would be better to go that way, than back to the expensive Specialist. The ones online seem to be exactly like the one the Specialist showed me, but less, less expensive. They have many, many different ones, but choosing the correct one seems to be a problem with me, because I know very little about them. And they have them in so may variations.

Your opinion, please. Thank you,

you had an episode of sleep apnea while cooking? Walking in a garden? And sitting in a restaurant???

Is that sleep apnea and that's how it affects people? I have never heard of that before. Horrifying! What brings you out of it???

As for your question----I would certainly buy something I could afford. It doesn't seem like you have any other option.

You damned well SHOULD be scared to death! What you are describing is NOT sleep apnea. Something is intermittently obstructing your airway while you are awake. You need to be evaluated by a pulmonologist or ENT now, before this problem stops your breathing for good!

Sleep apnea only happens while you are sleeping! Now it is possible to fall asleep sitting up, and I have done it, but I find it hard to believe you can fall asleep standing up or walking. I think Jasmine has something else going on, like maybe fainting.

Sleep apnea is when your breathing muscles stop doing that job while you're asleep. I know some people who have it so bad the machine doesn't help, neither does sleeping sitting up and they have to sleep in a chair where they are supported as they bend forward so the tongue doesn't slide back when they sleep.

And others are helped perfectly by the machine.

There are other types as well. But not while asleep.

You need to check heart, lungs, maybe brain scan.

There are benefits for veterans if you are one. I don't know about spouses of veterans. You might look up any group that helps pay for the machine.

At least start with the tests so you know what's what.

Also, I have had several while sleeping.

I have had brain scans, lung x-rays, and even have a PACEMAKER. I had a sleep study, and Sleep Apnea is what they came up with. But, I also have had several scares where I stop breathing while I am sleeping.
