That is not how the immune system works. For one thing, everyone who doesn't live in a bubble wrap is exposed to many different antigens every day. Everyone's immune system has "opportunity" to get a work out every single day.
The only way to get immunity to flu is to either get the disease or get the vaccine. There is no other way.
Washing with soap and water is preferable to hand sanitizer, but handwashing is important. This "hygiene hypothesis" about playing in dirt and then not washing hands being beneficial is not established fact. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1448690/
The above is lengthy and dry, but worth reading.

We still invite them to do things with us, but we realize that 50% of the time, they will cancel because one or more of them is sick.
You might think there is a genetic component, but both kids are adopted and were not blood siblings. So here we have four people, none of who are related to each other, but who live in the same house and are all sick much more than average. I'm thinking there must be an environmental factor, but I'm darned if I know what it could be.
I don't know. I know some people who constantly bleach and sanitize everything. They are constantly sick and the kids are always at the doctor.
- I don't work outside of the home at this time, so that cuts down on being around a LOT of (sick) people!
- Eat out less & try to just be out in public less than usual.
I do this, but most people don't & I HATE that they do it: When I'm in line anywhere, people stand so close to me. I keep my distance from the person in front of me, but then the person behind me is right up on me & if they cough/sneeze, which they will eventually, their germs go right in my face! I wish people would step the f back!!!!!
(I've never gotten a flu shot in my entire life, BTW & I still won't now.)

If someone is standing in line BEHIND you how exactly do the "germs" from the "eventual" cough or sneeze end up in your face?

I know those people too.
And the *dirty* ones are never sick. Go figure. Shocking how the immune system gets stronger and stronger when it is allowed to do its job.
People who jump from antibiotic to antibiotic are always the sickest. Their immune systems are destroyed from all the antibiotics, gut microbiome so off kilter as to be useless. So they get sick and just go get more antibiotics ... and then they get sick .. and well, you know how the song goes ...

Oh, now, you can be within 5 feet of someone not sneezing or coughing but just BREATHING and they can make you sick. Better not go on any check out line. Not just other people in line next to you, but the CASHIER might be sick too. Breathing same air as them and TOUCHING your grocery items! Go on the Self Check Out Machines, but make sure to disinfect them first!!!!!!
Sorry, Katrina, this is no way to live being in fear of living among other people.
