Anybody familiar with this term beyond what is available from a basic google search?

Can a person ever get better without surgery? Does the hearing EVER return in the affected ear.

Yes. Aka acoustic neuroma.

I had a head MRI to rule this out on my left side. Turns out for me there's a different disease process at work that does pretty much what the acoustic neuroma does: hearing loss, ringing and loss of balance.

If by "get better" you mean "get my hearing back", no. If you mean "will the tumor go away by itself", no.

I've read dozens of acoustic neuroma patient stories and have never heard of the hearing returning.

I'm sorry. It is an extremely sucky condition. I read up on skull base surgery. When you have the tumor removed, you want to find someone who has done a lot of these procedures.

What I can tell you in terms of day to day living, is you get used to hearing with just one ear. My hearing is close to zero in my left ear and for some months, I couldn't eat out in restaurants because the noise level would be an unbearable cacophony. I wouldn't be able to hear my husband sitting across the table but somebody on the other side of the restaurant would sound like they were right next to me.

But somehow, I don't know how, I have adapted.

I hope it all goes well for you.

Default and...

Do you of you medical types know if it is safe to continue the use of androgel during the eternal process of trying to get in to see a neurologist for even an initial consultation? Any vitamin supplements to be avoided? What about coffee or other drinks with caffeine?
