It's funny how we get our head around things. When I first went to the doctor I was in denial about the extent of my issue and pain. I said "Oh, it hurts a little," and I had actually gone and bought a brace but I wasn't "letting it slow me down" and I wasn't wearing it all the time. Then the doc mentioned all these tests, and a tear, and surgery, and suddenly I was like "Ok, give me the brace, and I'll wear it, but I'm not wearing it on vacation and I don't need anything for pain."

Then the xray doc said "Oh there's that tear right there - good luck," and suddenly my wrist really did start hurting in earnest - well, to be honest it was already hurting but I was trying to ignore it as much as possible - now it was like I gave in and said, "You know what - dadnabbit, my wrist freaking hurts." And I started wearing the brace every minute.

Then today I went in and was all mentally prepared with a plan - no surgery, cortisone shot, come back and re-evaluate after vacation but between you, me and the fence post, I wasn't planning on wearing this dang brace 24/7 on vacation. THEN the doc says, "This is a bad tear. You need surgery and I'm going to refer you to our hand specialist," and suddenly I'm like "OK, OK, I'LL WEAR THE FREAKING BRACE ALL THE TIME ON VACATION BUT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON'T SCHEDULE ME FOR SURGERY TILL I GET BACK!" And I was all like, "OK but I can get a cortisone shot for pain while I'm on vacation, right, and then when I get back we can just re evaluate everything because I might not need surgery," and the doctor said, "Look, I can't give you cortisone because - well, because you need surgery most likely and cortisone can impede surgery for up to six weeks and we don't need to wait that long," and suddenly I'm like, "I love this brace. Let me wear it. I will wear it non stop. I will sit on a beach and do nothing. I promise to behave. I will not even lift my purse or a drink with this hand - but speaking of drinks, I do want to have a Bloody Mary or a glass of wine - or both - every single day on vacation, so can I at least do that? And wear the brace?"

And he smiled and said, "I am going to prescribe something for pain that you can take WITH a drink, so no worries there. Wear THIS BRACE - all the time - and come back in a week, and meanwhile, have fun."

OK - I'll have as much fun as I can. Which is considerably less fun that I originally planned on but at least it's at the beach.

Due to my husband's work schedule and our vacation, it actually does look like I won't be getting surgery for four more weeks, but that's OK - have brace and have meds, have vacation and have a good excuse to do nothing between now and then.

I seem to recall that "bargaining" follows "denial."

I think tomorrow I am just in for a brace (well ,continuing a brace) and a cortisone shot. RICE and my husband is not letting me pick up anything, which is nice. I plan to walk along the beach, eat fabulous seafood, relax, and drink beachy drinks - we'll see how things go after I get back!
Sorry that happened, but at least you have your left hand to hold the pina coladas. Iím leaving in 10 days, and Iím scared something will happen to screw it up, too.

Kathryn, I can totally identify with your line of thinking here. I know the process well, it's denial of the reality (or as I figure, ignoring it will make it go away, or at least set itself on a back burner till later), then when those cold hard facts of the injury insist on butting their way through your insistence that YOU decide what's bad and what's just an inconcenience to be dealt with when you have the time, then it's bargaining as was mentioned. Kind of ends up in a do what you gotta do category, and considering your optomistic nature, you figure there are ways to do what you gotta do and not have your entire world go to pot (including enjoying your vacation) in the process.

So you'll wear the honkin brace-think of it as protecting that injury from getting worse, and maybe helping to minimize the pain, and you'll concentrate on having a great vacation, including those Bloody Marys, and your wrist injury will fade to the background (as you know steps are being taken to correct it), even just cor a little while.
