Default Back pops when I do Situps

For some reason I have been getting these irritating little popping noises in my lower back every time I do a situp. There is no pain or anything, but it is a little disconcerting. One time a few weeks back I had back pain for a couple days in about the same area which started about the day after I did good number of situps.

I am curious if anyone knows anything about this sort of problem. Is it bad technique? Something I could possibly avoid through stretching?

I did a little research and I am wondering if it might be wise to switch to crunches since situps are apparently rather bad for the spine.

I would check with a trainer (even once) just to make sure your technique is good. I would also recommend getting on of those large exercise balls to put under your back during crunches. It supports the back so may alleviate that.
