Kathryn, just spoke with a friend last weekend who also had severe tendon troubles with this medication.

She was so angry because her doctor didn't mention any side effects before prescribing.

I don't blame her for being angry! The only reason I even remembered taking the Cipro for a week (during which time I had no issues - mine happened later) was because the pharmacist, not the doctor, called me up to the window and went over the possible side effects, which struck me as a little odd.

I've taken Cipro any times in the past with no issues, but I will probably ask for another type of antibiotic if needed in the future.

I started having a severe allergic reaction when the doc gave me cipro right before gall bladder surgery. They had to give me a huge dose of Benedryl as I caught the start of itching right away. I knew I was allergic to penicillin and sulfa, but questioned this. So I went home and did a search. I take tizanidine (generic Zanaflex) for muscle spasms and it said in huge capital letters......Do NOT take cipro or fluvoximine with tizanidine!! Now this was in my records that I took this drug and they apparently didn't even bother checking. Just shoved the cipro at me. I also got sick after the procedure due to so many drugs in my system and had to stay overnight in the hospital for what was supposed to be an outpatient surgery.

This was back in 2008. Now I have it on the ICE on my phone as well as making sure it is prominent in my records.

Just got in from my second opinion appointment with an orthopedic specialist. I have a torn TFCC in my wrist (cartilege) as well as tendonitis and tendosynovitis. Oh and now a cyst emanating from the tendon drama.

He said that my cartilege is basically dissolving in my wrist and that it's consistent with Cipro damage, but he wants to rule out autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. However, I have zero other symptoms of any other sort of illness - in fact, I feel great other than my left wrist. I was checked by a rheumatologist when both my Achilles tendons disintegrated due to one week on Cipro and I was negative for anything. Imaging (MRI, X ray, and arthrogram) showed no bone loss and no sign of arthritis.

So this is probably Cipro damage and guess what - there's nothing much that can be done for it. So I just hope it doesn't hit my right hand (my dominant hand).

That is one good thing about the iphone. I have an allergy to clonidine: itching, hives, and respiratory distress. I filled out the whole ICE feature. I don’t know too many people who actually utilize this on their phones.

It’s good that you brought attention to it.

Added: it’s surprising the hospital pharmacist didn't question the cipro order. Sorry you had to go through that.

Oh that is terrible. I'd be researching like crazy to see if there's anything you can do or take to keep that right hand protected.

Thanks for posting.

I've also got an ICE contact in my Android - both an ICE group (family members) and under my profile. I really encourage people to fill that section out.

I didn’t realize Android had it, too. I’ve only ever had iphones. That’s great. My son is an RN. His girlfriend is an RN also and she works in the ER. They both campaign for people to take five minutes and fill out the app. She says the info in the app has come in very handy quite a few times when people were brought in who couldn’t answer questions and had nobody with them.
