Because of my wife's recent illness she is confined to a bed and does need assistance. She spends most of her time sleeping so it is hard to hear when she needs help from another room. Paging systems can be expensive. Of course some patients could simply use their cellphones to call an attendant or loved one. We found this method that works great for us: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Utilitech-W...l-Kit/50237325. I simply attached the doorbell button on the rail of the hospital bed and the plugin bell in my computer room where I stay waiting for my next call. Home Depot also has cheap wireless plugin doorbells and I imagine that there are many other stores besides Lowe's and Home Depot that sell these systems for under $20.

What we like about this system is that the button is very easy to press for somebody that is very weak. Of course it would not work if you have many people coming to your door and you had the same doorbell! I hope this idea helps somebody.

If it's not too tiring for your wife to talk, you can also get a set of walkie-talkies; they cost about $20. I got the idea from treating a retired RN who broke her leg going down the staircase in her house. Her husband is also a retired RN, and he went out and bought 2 walkie-talkies so they can communicate. They are empty-nesters but they live in a big, 3-story house.

Thank you. We considered the walkie-talkies; but this is so much easier for her. She is on chemo drugs and pain killers that sometimes leaves her confused. She only has to press the button on the side of her bed. And it is cheap and has worked very effectively. Of course you want what works for your circumstances the best and I do not pretend to know every situation. It is simply an alternative for those looking for an alternative.

This is what my 90 year old neighbor uses, he is upstairs in bed and his caretaker is downstairs doing housework.

I bought one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/Caregiver-wir...aregiver+pager

The advantage is that you wear the receiver like wristwatch, so I don't have to be in a specific spot to hear the page. The range is surprisingly long: I've been paged successfully when I'm mowing the pasture or out in the barn.

You can also buy Amazon Echo dots and connect them such that they can be used as Intercoms. It's called the "drop in" feature and you can go on You Tube to see instructions for how to set them up. I use them to call into my kids rooms so I don't have to shout for them. The benefit is that they're completely voice activated. However, they are subject to the usual limitations of your house's Wi Fi and Internet interruptions, and we know how that sometimes goes.

Right now there are two of us available. So I can mow the back 'forty' without fear. Soon the other one of us will be going to work with the colleges starting the Fall semester and that might be a good alternative. I appreciate the idea and I will keep it in mind! Thank you!

Like I said before; all of our circumstances are different and sometimes change comes very fast. It is great to have alternatives.
