What insect leaves large red welts that hang on for days and days and itch like fury?

All right, they all itch like fury and hang on for days. But the large red welts might help identify it. The welts are the size of a nickel, almost flat and quite red. Not in a cluster. Just one large one on an arm, one on a leg like it was a single insect. This is in a city if that matters. Thanks.

Another shot: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deer_fly or maybe https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/313714.php? Lots of little critters out there that want a piece of you to take home to momma!

I've had chigger bites that are large as a nickel....

Are you allergic to any insects? I've also had mosquito bites get that big, and itch terribly...I get swelling and the flesh at the spot gets warm to touch...

Are you along the coast, or in woods...?

Mosquito bites get big like that for me, or sometimes even bigger.

No, I am not allergic to them. I think mostly I wanted to be sure it is an outdoor insect and not something in the apartment. That we all guard against. I have never had a problem here but stay alert.

Thank you on those. I didn't know they could be so large. Live and learn.

The fact that you have no idea what bit you is a big clue.

Black flies, mosquitoes, fleas, etc., are very noticeable and you'd know what bit you because you would have seen them.

Have you looked up images of bed bug bites?

OP since you didn't post a photo of the bite here is a web site that does show different bug discolorations and markings. Maybe you can match one.
