I had gallstones and had my gallbladder removed about 2 and a half years ago. Up until about a month ago I was doing perfectly fine. Then about a month ago I had a random episode of diarrhea that lasted on and off about 2 days. For the past month after that I have been fine, and then today more diarrhea again.

I had heard that one of the side effects of gallbladder removal surgery is bile acid malabsorption (BAM) which can cause diarrhea. However, I'm wondering if that is really something that would start to occur over 2 years after surgery? I don't know if these are just random bugs or food sensitivities. I'm curious to hear others' experiences.

ansky, I had my gall bladder removed about 5 years ago. Now the only time I have diarrhea is when I eat too much fat.

I said "too much fat", not "good fats".

The OP is concerned about possible Bile Acid Malabsorption Syndrome

Do you know what Bile Acid Malabsorption Syndrome is???

It is typically caused by OVERPRODUCTION of bile salts....

Do you know what Ox Bile is?

It is Bile Salts....

Do you know what the treatment is for BAM???

Bile Acid Sequestrants like cholestyramine...

Do you know what would be THE ABSOLUTE WORST THING a person with BAM could do for their condition??

That would be to take MORE bile salts AKA Ox Bile

Maybe you shouldn't just weigh in on conditions you know nothing about??????

A site that SELLS Bile Salts recommending everyone who has had their gallbladder removed take Bile Salts...

How surprising

HERE is some good information about bile salts after cholecystectomy

'Your liver continues to make bile after your gallbladder is removed, but the bile flows more directly into the intestine, instead of collecting in the gallbladder. Without a gallbladder, which gives bile a chance to pool and stones a place to form, there's little reason for you or others who have had their gallbladders removed to take bile salts.'

HERE is some information on BAM syndrome:

Excess bile acids entering the colon can cause the classic signs and symptoms of bile acid malabsorption (BAM), including watery stool, urgency and fecal incontinence. Although BAM has been associated with diarrhea for nearly 50 years, it remains an underrecognized and underdiagnosed cause of chronic diarrhea.

Take home messages

1. People who have undergone gallbladder removal do not routinely need to take Bile Salts

2. People who might be suffering from BAM should DEFINITELY NOT take Bile Salts

That does not sound conclusive to me. More likely you picked up a virus.

Do a gall bladder flush at home before considering removal.

The flush is cheap and natural.

I'm doing one un 3 days.
