Stem Cells are used in many parts of the world BUT in the U.S. a reluctance to move forward...my only thinking is Too Much Money Will Be Lost For Pharma and The Drugs With All the Huge Profits.

Fighting back and forth needs to stop or this thread will be closed for good and infractions issued. Also, be respectful of people's feelings. This goes for everyone involved.

It is important to note regarding this Multiple Sclerosis (MS) procedure that uses stem cells to successfully treat the disease is that it is not the stem cells that are inherently dangerous. Stem cells have shown their efficacy and safety over multiple years now over multiple diseases. It is the chemotherapy and completely wiping ones immune system that is dangerous and should be done only in the best clinics/hospitals with all the necessary safeguards.

A bright positive future awaits many MS patients as well as many other people with various diseases because of stem cells.

If there is so much promise for stem cells, why do you think the U.S. is dragging behind?

The US isn't "dragging behind" HSCT...hematopoietic stem cell transplantation has been around for decades and was pioneered in the US with Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to the US physician behind this treatment.

Stem cell transplants are primarily used to treat blood and lymph cancers but have recently expanded to MS treatment. Still very risky procedure with the obliteration of the immune system, infection risk, graft vs host reaction etc...

Stem Cell Transplants for MS bear NO resemblance to the sham procedures performed for every malady under the sun injecting PRP and Stem Cells into various joints and orifices

And so many other countries are way ahead of the U.S. Why is that? And what I've been talking about are not sham procedures. My sister died waiting for Stem Cells....yes I'm angry and frustrated. She and her husband chose NOT to go to another country for her MS Stem Cells as the doctors kept her hanging on here. The thousands spent on all the drugs, they could have coughed up the funds to go to another country. But no, the doctors kept them hanging.

Who says it is? It's Pharma doing it.

Name the countries that are ahead of the US for HSCT....

Which countries exactly are we LAGGING behind for this procedure that was essentially DEVELOPED in the US.

Was your sister on a waiting list to be entered into a study program for HSCT for MS??

That is the only way should could have been "waiting"....by the way you have to be a study participant to have this procedure performed in other countries as well.

I'm pretty sure you have no idea what Stem Cell Transplantation entails for the treatment of MS....

It isn't an office procedure.....it is a complex medical procedure requiring complete eradication of the host bone marrow through chemo, radiation or both followed by replacement with donor stem cells....

While shown to be effective for MS it is also incredibly risky and incredibly expensive...

1) gets caught up in the abortion debate, since many stem cell lines were/are developed from fetal tissue

2) it's expensive, and we have the first world's clunkiest health care payment system

While there is some truth to 1) above in that umbilical cord blood CAN be used for HSCT, it isn't the typical source particularly in adults....

Usual donors are 1st degree relatives ideally or HLA matched strangers which is why you see drives for bone marrow donors...

Again typical recipients of HSCT are cancer patients not MS patients....

As for 2), again no argument our health care payment system is broken no doubt

However HSCT is expensive no matter how you look at it, average of around 200K with long hospital stays of around 30 days...NO healthcare system can support unlimited use of this modality....certainly not single payer or national health systems...
