Gut bacteria and the gut microbiome are incredibly important areas of research. Science is showing the gut microbiome is showing a tremendous link to mental health and many brain diseases. If current science continues to hold true, we very well may be on the path to treating and curing these diseases.

Current science is showing that fecal transplants from a healthy donor in some of the disease above has shown to either stall disease progression or outright improve the disease in multiple diseases above. Other clinical trials to treat some of the other diseases by correcting the gut microbiome are expected to start in the future.

Despite the current positive evidence, fecal transplants are currently illegal and restricted by the FDA for all but the treatment of Clostridium difficile (C. Difficile).

Open Biome is the name of the company that heavily screens all fecal donors to ensure no other disease is present in donor or sample, the gut bacteria is in the right amounts and that the material is otherwise safe in the treatment of C. Difficile. Its way safer then getting a "poop shake" transplant from an unscreened friend/family member as is becoming more common according to videos on You tube.

Do it yourself (DIY) fecal transplants are becoming more common because of so much of the promising research showing the links and benefits of a healthy gut biome and disease and the lack of truly effective treatment options for the disease above.

Do you think its time the government open up heavily screened fecal transplants from companies like Open Biome so people who are in need now have this option should they choose?

I feel the government is overreaching in just about every facet of our lives. Unless they pay for treatment, I feel it's time for the decision to be left to patient and doctor.
Is banning "dangerous" hobbies next? Hiking (wild animals, fall off cliff, etc), surfing, mountain climbing, sky diving, etc?
Right?

I've read quite a few of the studies on this latest fund-attracting fad. The vast majority of them are poorly designed with too few subjects and poorly defined end points, often more subjective than objective.

Research should continue, but one would predict a dead end. The GI tract has been evolving for 100s of millions of years, and MotherNature has a way of finding the best answer and then sticking with it. The colon is basically a storage organ (so we're not continuously dropping clues for the predators to follow) and is quite impermeable so its contents don't seep back into our bodies. It's much more likely that changes in gut flora are a result of disease and not a cause of it.

How would someone go about determining if their gut is "healthy"? or if they have the right amount of the "good" bacteria?

Also, how the hell do you do a DIY fecal transplant?! i don't want to know...
