Anyone told they have Greater Trochanter Bursitis? (x-rays, pain, cold)

I deal with this issue on the hip replacement side and it burns and by the end of the day I can scream with pain. I understand this is not that uncommon condition. I'll be seeing the D.O. soon and see if he can offer any suggestions. Topicals calm the pain for a while but everything is temporary.

I had that once at a time I was driving a couple hours each way for my job ( visiting clients in various locations), and recall taking 800mg Motrin ( borrowed from my husband, it was his prescription but he had a lot extra) timing it so I could tolerate the driving, and not acting as though I had pain while I was seeing the clients. That Motrin was the only thing that would touch the pain, albeit temporarily. Though I would put ice on the area and try to rest it when I was able.
I do recall how intense the pain was, and after having it for maybe a week or so, and realizing it was getting worse, and having no idea what it was, I was even running a slight fever ( intense pain can do that), I finally took it to the ER.
After they did the various imaging tests ( X-rays, maybe CTscans), and general poking around, they told me it was likely bursitis in the area of the hip (they showed me pictures similar to the one you linked), I guess it's a diagnosis of exclusion based on not finding anything else on the tests, and symptoms.
They gave me a IM shot of what I think was a muscle relaxer/pain reliever, but I don't recall what it was.
They gave me a prescription for 800 mg Motrin, and instructed me to rest it, ie, stay off it for a couple days, and put ice on it. That's what I did, and it got better, and I've never had it again.
I'd guess your doctor could prescribe some type of anti-inflammatory medication, and I'd imagine he'd also advise you to put ice on the area, and rest it long enough to give it a chance to heal. I guess there is also the option of a cortisone shot into the inflamed bursa ( or around it, not sure where those shots go, exactly), but I don't know how you'd feel about that.
I also get shoulder bursitis occasionally, and this is treated the same way. My go to pain reliever for this has always been Aleve, but I'm having to be careful with that. The ice and rest ( as well as exercises specifically for shoulder bursitis I found on YouTube) have also helped a lot.
Yes. I suffered from this for a while in 1989 as part of the cortisol withdrawal after my Cushing's surgery. I had such trouble waking after sitting for any length of time that I literally crab walked - I couldn't stand up straight. Driving or sitting in a car was excruciating. I finally got a shot of cortisone into the hip joint. The morning following the shot I got out of bed and fell down, which was unexpected! However, after resting on the couch where I dragged myself, I felt great. The relief has continued pretty much since then, except for a few instances in recent years. I have found pretty decent relief with cold packs placed against the affected area and the use of Voltaren gel.
I won't go for cortisone injections as these only weaken our cartilage more. I never had this before hip replacement, so it's from that "injury" ... I've done some reading and this can be from an injury and some other issues.

A cortisone shot for trochanteric bursitis would have NO effect on cartilage since the injection is nowhere near any cartilage.....not to mention the fact that after hip replacement surgery you have no cartilage there anyway...

Well, I have never had a hip replacement, and no hip injuries that I am aware of, yet got that trochanteric bursitis apparently out of the blue.

If your hip has been replaced you no longer have a trochanter or bursa either! The "bone" is titanium. There isn't a bursa any longer. Impossible to get bursitis in a synthetic hip.

No the greater trochanter is still there after THA as is the trochanteric bursa. Trochanteric bursitis is actually fairly common after hip replacement but anyone can get it with or without replacement.
Corticosteroid injections are quite safe and effective at least in the short term for this condition, if the OP chooses not to go that route that is her choice but her rationale for this particular injection is erroneous

Then, why does it say this online?
"17 percent of people who have had a hip replacement have trochanteric bursitis. ... In extreme cases, a person can have their bursa removed through ..."
Bursa sac inflammation anywhere is murder...so sorry, jamin.
