RE: scanning for osteoporosis-- one of the few conditions for which preventive measures are worth it. If more people got more Calcium and spent more time in the sun & exercised more throughout their younger years, we wouldn't have all the osteoporosis we see now.
It could be argued that we really don't need routine bone density scans: everybody should be taking Calcium/Vit D supplements because most people don't get nearly enough dairy product in their diets, the only "good" source of Ca) and that the pills for treatment of osteo- (biphosphonates) don't work nearly as well as people are led to believe. They also lose their value after 1-2 yrs of treatment.
