I get deathly ill every time I visit a certain tourist attraction in my area. There are people who come from literally all over the world to see it and not all are hygienically inclined. Also there's invariably a lot of school trips and kids there too. It's the perfect storm of germs and I have gotten terrible infections (the flu twice and bad colds numerous times) within a day or two of a visit. It never fails.
I use hand sanitizer and try to avoid going during cold and flu season but I think I have to just stop visiting altogether. I enjoy this particular attraction and out of town guests always want to be go. Anyone else notice they get sick when going somewhere like this?

Tourist attractions are gold mines for spreading of germs, illness. If you use hand sanitizer frequently, it might be that airborne illnesses are the problem. I suppose you could wear a mask but that'd likely keep away some of the joy. Then again, it might be a specific mold erc. you come in contact with....

The time of year doesn't seem to matter. I have thought about writing to them and asking if they can put more signage around about hand washing and not visiting when sick etc. Ironically I used to live not far from this place (it's in a major city) and never got sick when visiting. But now that I've moved away I get really ill every time I go. Last visit a woman from East Asia sneezed right in my face when we were standing in line and wiped her nose with her hand and then touched the railing we were standing by. I think a lot of people have different cultural norms about cleanliness so it might be a good idea to have a public health campaign around visiting.

I am generally very healthy. I wash my hands religiously. I eat a pescatarian diet and exercise regularly. This is the only place I visit where I'm pretty much guaranteed to get sick. And it's not its just me....my mate and guests have also fallen Ill after a visit. It's the place. There is no hand sanitizer available. Tons of people from all over the world. Lots of little kids touching things. Dirty bathrooms that are not cleaned enough. Escalators. Stair railings. Long lines.

There is. As I say it's a major tourist attraction in a big city. We have a lot of people who want to visit it. I'm going to have to start putting a moratorium on those visits. At first I thought it could be the guests themselves who were making me sick... maybe they were bringing some bug with them. Then my mate and I visited this place solo and we both got sick. A few months later we had guests and went again. Sick. I started thinking about the times I have has the flu or major colds in the last few years and I can always tie them back to a visit to this place. And it's odd, because as I said, I used to live nearby. But since moving I can't go there without coming down with something.

No, not even outside of the U.S. or Western Europe.
I has thought about that but it seems dramatic. It's probably better just not to go at all. Which is a shame. But I can't afford weeks of feeling awful after.
