I’m 34 and my GI doctor wants me to have a colonoscopy because of my symptoms. My symptoms are itchy and pain sometimes when I use the bathroom. There is also blood on the tissue sometimes when I wipe myself. The itching is what bothers me the most. I could be walking down the street and it randomly start itching.

I was suppose to get a colonoscopy months ago and posted a thread on here about it months ago but never got the colonoscopy. A few weeks ago my butt was hurting me so bad that I had to go to the emergency room. They gave me Lidocaine there and it numbed the pain. My GI doctor wants me to do a colonoscopy this Friday. I am nervous and don’t know if I can go a whole day without eating. I’m 5’8 160 but just don’t know if I can go a whole day without eating. I’m also nervous about the prep drink too and 2 pills I have to take. The not eating part is bothering me.

When I went to the emergency room they gave me a stool sample and it was negative

I really don’t want this colonoscopy test cause of the reasons I mentioned and plus I think it’s hemms. The test is this Friday. Should I reschedule? Should I do this test?

Edit: another thing I forgot to mention is that I usually eat Digorno pizza 4 nights a week. I don’t eat it for dinner though, it’s my late night snack around 9pm 3-4 nights a week. Not sure if this is relative to my situation but just wanted to mention it

No one can make that decision for you. Sounds like could be hemms, it often is for so many, it was for me and I worked to get a lot more regular over the years. That late snack is not helping you as I see it. Have a nice higher fiber apple. It's been said for a long time, don't eat after 6PM or so. Sounds like you are backed up. My thoughts only.

It hasn’t been said not to eat after 6pm. It depends on when people go to sleep. Eating after 6pm is absolutely fine if you go to bed at midnight, but makes less sense if you go to bed at 9pm. The OP should try to stick to easy to digest snacks that don’t have a lot of fiber (e.g. - an apple) because those are more likely to cause issues at bedtime. That’s not to say he shouldn’t try to up his fiber during the day, but usually if you want to have a later snack, it is best to choose items that are easy to digest. I actually eat a lot of fiber but I think I have issues because so much of what I eat is hard/impossible for my body to digest (it is fairly easy to tell).

That said, the OP has been dealing with this problem for something like 4-5 months and NEEDS to get the colonoscopy. He can’t tolerate the digital exam. His pain is getting worse.

Is that your expert diagnosis based on a thorough history and physical exam???

A physician, a GI specialist according to the OP, believes a colonoscopy is warranted. Clearly the GI PHYSICIAN doesn't think its just "hemms", or he wouldn't have ordered the colonoscopy...

A late night snack isn't causing GI bleeding, and as someone already pointed, NOWHERE "is it said" that one shouldn't eat after 6 PM or so

What does your height and weight have to do with fasting before the exam?? Do you think you will disappear missing a few meals??

OF COURSE you can go a whole day without eating, you could go several in fact and you would still be fine.

You are still able to take liquids, jello, soup broth etc....

You should follow your physician's advice.....he is the only one who has examined you and knows what he is looking for, anyone here is just making guesses, uneducated ones at that....

It might save your life or it may just give you piece of mind. No good reason not to. The anesthesia is pretty enjoyable, too.

When you are drinking quarts of the prep liquid, you won't feel hungry, believe me. If your doctor says to do it, do it. Although I don't know why they can't rule out hemorrhoids with a different test.

The prep isn't fun but the actual colonoscopy is not the big deal some make it out to be. Get it done. The one day of inconvenience prepping for it is a small price to pay should it turn out to be cancer. One of my brothers put off getting his 1st one at 50 and at 53 found himself with cancer and two major surgeries that could have been avoided had he just gone when he was supposed to.

The GI doctor said it’s probably most likely hemmorroids but wants to do the colonoscopy to make sure it’s nothing else such as ulcers or IBS. I’m just uncomfortable with not eating for a whole day
