Odds of catching the flu in any given year are 5% to 20%. If you donít make an effort to prevent it, odds say that you probably wonít catch it anyway.

You don't understand epidemiology. May I recommend:

"Epidemiology: A Very Short Introduction"

People who live in caves in the Yukon, etc don't need to make much effort to prevent it. Those who live in society, particularly those who go to work or school every day, do need to take precautions.

I think that's a big part of it, and we try to avoid those crowds during flu season. Can't always be avoided, but minimizing the exposure to any of the respiratory communicable diseases is why docs advise that people with immunocompromised immune systems (such as those on chemotherapy) avoid crowded scenarios as much as possible, and why you might see such a person wearing a face mask in public.

Taking care of oneself to give one's immune system a chance to be at its best, and hand washing also go a long way. Doesn't absolutely prevent flu, but it sure helps.
