A good friend of mine got a very bad case of shingles last spring. Now I hear another close friend has it. I have not gotten my vaccine yet....very expensive. I do have the prescription and of all places can get it at Kroger. The doctor does not give it, and I had to almost beg for it. He is always ready to give me a tetneus, and or flu shot, which I never get. I am in general good health. My two friends are not as lucky. One has recovered ok, but still has some residual nerve pain. The other has trouble with diabetes. Anyone else hearing about a lot of these cases showing up?
never even heard of it. But i do know that yogurt, buttermilk, kefir, all those things with live cultures supress outbreaks. My grandfather had a bad case and he began the day with a glass of buttermilk (yeah it tastes better), and he never had an outbreak ever again for the rest of his life.
I am 68. When I read about the Shingles vaccine last year I asked my doctor if I should get it since I had Chicken Pox when I was a kid. He said it would be a good idea. My insurance covered it so I don't know what it cost.
Yes, anyone who had chicken pox as a child is suseptible. I heard that lies dormant in your system. I think the vaccine runs close to $300. I am going to call my insurance company next week and see what they cover.
My mother has shingles right now actually! Don't know where it came from
As written above, if your mother had chicken pox EVER, she is at risk for shingles.
The Herpes zoster virus, the virus that causes chicken pox causes the acute infection, with the low grade fever and rash (usually described as a 'dewdrop on a rose petal') and then is dormant (inactive but present) in the dorsal root ganglia of the spinal cord. These ganglia (which are collections of nerve cell bodies) supply the sensory innervation to most of the body (except for the face, which is from the fifth cranial nerve) and run parallel courses called dermatomes. That's why they often have a band-like distribution on the chest, for instance. Any immune insult, such as chemotherapy, a cold, etc. can cause reactivation of the virus, which then appears as shingles.
Is there anywhere close to Gadsden Alabama I can get a shingles vaccine for a low income family. My mother had it and said it was horrible. I don't want her to have togo through that again.
Where is Tek_Freek, he has it now and I wonder if he will have the vaccination. I didn't hear him talk about it. Everyone I know who has had it, has pain and scarring sometimes. I guess I should think about it since I had chicken pox.

I had a mild outbreak of shingles about 10-12 yrs ago and none since then. Anyone know if I should get the vaccine? or am I ineligible?
