I have always heard that they come from the stomach. I am not sure how to stop it but I am sure someone will have an idea. I would do something to calm the stomach, like ginger supplements.

If you are talking about cold sores, herpes simplex..can be brought on by stress as mentioned, also by exposure to too much sun. always use lip balm with sunscreen in the hot weather. also, you can take a nutritional supplement called lysine. it helps keep them at bay. it also helps speed up healing for me.
If you are talking about canker sores inside of your mouth, that can come from eating fruit with too much acid..tomatoes, oranges etc.

I don't think anyone knows the exact cause of canker sores. I get them if I have any type of injury in my mouth. If I accidently bite my lip, a few days later I will have a canker sore. I haven't found anything that makes them heal faster either, you just have to wait it out.

Like every other poster stated it could be a variety of things, herpes, spicy foods, an allergic reaction to food, I know cinnamon does it for me, biting your lip in your sleep, thrush....I would see an M.D first. You can alleviate the pain with aspergum and help the healing process with hydrogen peroxide or saltwater rinses.

I used to get them frequently.
Luckily haven't had any in years.
Doc said they are caused from a dormant virus.
Rinsing my mouth with salt water seemed to help take the pain away and speed the healing process. But it did hurt, burn, while doing the salt treatment but felt better afterwards.
There is some kind of otc medicine now you can get that is supposed to work pretty well but I don't know what it is.
I just used salt water.
I have heard of people putting hydrogen peroxide on them but I was never that brave.

i get apthous ulcers (cankers) all the time and they usually come in pairs. usually in the same area, near my wisdom teeth in the back but they can be anywhere. they come in spurts, sometimes i will have one for a couple weeks then get another one or two a couple weeks later. sometimes i go a month w/out them. occassionally i will go a couple months without something, but usually it's every other month. they're painful, make my lymph nodes swell, and make me tired.
so now i have an ulcer on my gums above my teeth. i had another one about a month and a half ago on my front tooth and it was painful. then it went away slowly and reappeared about two/three weeks later. now it's gone again. and now i have another one on a different tooth. this is supposed to be herpes, b/c it's on the gingiva.
soooo - my question is, does anyone else ever have this much trouble and besides lysine, gargling, etc. - have you found anything that alleviates them entirely? as you say, it's usually caused by stress, but according to my ulcers, i would be the most stressed out person in the world! and that's not the case, so i'm not sure what's causing these.
thanks everyone.

Aphthous (note the spelling!) ulcers are extremely common. They CAN be herpetiform (caused by herpes viruses) but not all are. Many, when cultured, reveal no bacteria or other microorganisms. Stress, exposure to sunlight, local trauma are all etiologic factors.
Local relief can be obtained with warm water mouth rinses (with a little hydrogen peroxide, if you think that helps). Women have these more frequently than men, in general.

mouth ulcers.
Hi, I hope nobody minds if I add a brief comment here. I used to get a lot, well frequent I guess, of mouth ulcers when I was a kid but have no idea of what caused them. I used to use powdered 'Alum', (I have no idea what that is, or if you can still get it). I would wet the tip of one finger, dip it into the Alum powder and dab it directly on the ulcer, (and yes, it hurt a tad). The powder is not like 'talc' powder as such, but more like fine granulated salt in appearance. I was told never to swallow the resultant saliva though as I think Alum is a moisture absorber, and from memory it used to result in an increase of saliva immediately after application of which I would just spit out. The effect is that you don't feel the pain of the ulcer, which in turn would eliminate the tendancy of constant touching of the ulcer with my tongue or being aggravated by eating etc. On application of Alum several times a day the ulcers would disappear before I realised they were gone, (if you get my drift, as a child), probably a couple of days. I have no idea of how long they would actually last for if untreated though.
I am not sure if what you people are talking about is the same as I have stated here as I stopped getting them when going through 'teen' years, I have never had them in adult life, but by hell I remember them like yesterday.
Hope I am not intruding here but I felt I had to say something in case my past issue was the same as what you are talking about here and this may be another way of treating them. This 'Alum' stuff used to fix me no problem.
