On Sunday, World AIDS Day, the global fight against the human immunodeficiency virus is poised to make important advances thanks to three experimental HIV vaccines that are entering the final stages of testing at sites across the globe.
While any of these three late-stage HIV vaccine trials — known as HVTN 702, Imbokodo and Mosaico — could fail, scientists say they are more hopeful than at any time since 1984, when Secretary of Health and Human Services Margaret Heckler raised hopes by predicting that there would be a test-worthy HIV vaccine within two years.
This is “perhaps one of the most optimistic moments we have been in," said Dr. Susan Buchbinder, director of the Bridge HIV research program at the San Francisco Department of Public Health and a chair of both the Imbokodo and Mosaico trials.
“We have three vaccines currently being tested in efficacy trials," she said, "and it takes quite a bit to actually be promising enough in the earlier stages stages of trials to move you forward into an efficacy study."

Hopefully, there will be a positive outcome soon

Why is a vaccine needed for an illness that is fully avoidable?

Unless people decide upfront that they fully intend to engage directly in risky behavior that could negatively affect their health?

It's not fully avoidable. People do have accidents where they come into contact with other people's blood, particularly those who work in certain fields. There are also numerous cases of people cheating on their spouses, contracting HIV, and infecting their spouse who had no reason to think they were at risk. And, of course, there is rape.

That's beside the fact that your question is super gross to start with.

HIV is avoidable. If you're afraid of catching it, don't work with blood. Not going to get into an argument re poor relationship choices or assault.

Will the vaccine be mandatory for children entering school?

If it's a voluntary vaccine, ADULTS can choose to get it. Making something like this mandatory for the entire population is inappropriate since the illness is not a public health issue for children. So if you think you are going to make poor relationship choices or are afraid of being raped, then you could make that choice and get it.

But I would guess as soon as it's approved, it will be dumped on 1 y olds. Not adults.

Common sense would indicate that an HIV vaccine would be NOT mandatory, and would be offered to groups at high risk for the disease, not the general population. Not one year olds, unless, perhaps, they were born to HIV infected mothers.

Yes, it will be mandatory for children, same as Hep. B for Newborns, and lately, HPV for school children. Reason being it CAN be legislated for children, but not for adults. A voluntary adult vaccine for a small number of the population will not make enough profits. These are Blood Borne Pathogens, and also sexually transmitted. No child is going to catch HIV or HPV sitting next to a child in school. An adult won't catch it standing on a supermarket line.

I can remember the days when science was supposed to work on CURES for these diseases for the percentage of people who actually HAD the diseases. Now it is let's invent a vaccine and give it to the entire population, specifically to young children. Not EVERYONE in society is going to catch AIDS, HEP. B., or HPV.

I had a close gay male friend who died from AIDS back in the 80's. I was not terrified to be around him. CURE him.. Don't give ME, or a Newborn, an HIV vaccine.

Why is a vaccine needed??????

Do you have any idea at all of the AIDS epidemic that is ongoing in Africa and the number of people dying annually???

The only hope of eradicating HIV is a vaccine....

The unfounded anti vaccine, anti science movement in this country is truly frightening not to mention the short sightedness and failure to consider the wider world around us....

You know what's better than a CURE???

A way to prevent the disease from every occurring in the first place...

Kinda like what a vaccine does

Like the HepB vaccine given to 12 HOURS OLD NEWBORNS???

Because I hear there is a TON of unprotected sex and heroin use in the nursery. The nurses just look away ...

Common sense, ha. THAT'S rich.

The transmission rates are no different than anywhere else.

Please talk in depth about HIV in 3rd world countries, transmission, sex practice and current solutions that do not involve vaccines.
