Today, I'm coming down with "something" - hopefully just a cold for I've had an annual flu shot.
Airborne means just that - airborne. The entire time I was sitting there I kept thinking: why in the world can't the medical staff have masks they can hand out to clearly sick patients? The man knew he was ill and appeared mortified by his coughing - he attempted to isolate himself in an odd corner of the waiting room.

I worked in a pediatric office that kept masks for both kids and their attendants (usually parents) who were coughing. We had a big sign as well about using them, and sometimes the front desk people would peremptorily give them to someone who was coughing.
