It's not the quality of food of eating out or cooking at home. It's the quantity. Before the pandemic, we ate out once a 1-2x a month with extended family, yet Spouse still steadily lost 15 lbs. in a few months (half a year? Don't remember.).
But since the pandemic and we're home 2x a week, he snacks more at home and gained 6 lbs. back. That's only from 2 months of sheltering in place and ordering takeout 1x a month. It's the additional snacking at home during the day for sure.
20+ pounds down. The last few years I've eaten little at home. My main meal has been breakfast or lunch from either a drive thru or the office cafeteria, often very big meals.
That has changed the last 2 months. Only eating at home. Result is maybe the least amount I've ever eaten over 2 months. There have been days I've only eaten a can of tuna or a few hard boiled eggs (not often). Never believed "forget to eat" was a thing until now.
Result is I'm the lightest I've been since the late 1990s. Last week I went golfing and found my golfing shorts were way too big, and the belt on the tightest buckle was still a little loose. An untended crash diet.
I'm eating a little bit less but have gained three lbs. That's because I had to quit going to the gym and am not exercising at all. COVID-19 stress has sapped my motivation. I just want to cocoon until it's over.
I'm down 15 pounds; but I'm still working. If I was not working I would think my weight would have gone up. It might go up now because I found out for the last month that my favorite pizza/cheese steak/Stromboli restaurant is serving take-out! Maybe my Governor will reconsider and shut it down to protect my waistline?
One thing that would hurt our health with this lockdown would be our fears. I have trees that I need to cut because they are dying from invasive pest. But now I am afraid that, if something goes wrong, I might end up in the hospital. People a lot younger than me have been hurt taking down trees. So it boils down to if I want to take a chance and end up in a hospital that is treating corona virus patients or do I want to play it safe. So far 'safe' is winning. But safe is not helping me get the exercise I need. I am sure there are others that are making the same choices when it comes to risky exercises or work.
With so many of us staying home and maybe cooking a lot more and eating out a lot less, was wondering if your health/weight has changed very much?
How are you doing?
I typically have a fairly healthy diet but we eat out a 3-5 meals a week. I've been eating healthier (because we've been cooking everything at home, thus more control) and drinking less (usually 8-10 glasses of wine a week...down to ~2-3 glasses a week).
I've also been working out more often (usually 2-3 days a week, now 5-6 days a week).
Overall, I'm happy. I've lost 5-7 lbs of fat and gained it back in muscle mass. My pants feel like they're a size too big now and my belts are getting a workout...shirts getting tighter in the right places.
I'm not sleeping well. I've been excercising more and am losing weight. I'm down around 7 pounds. The daily drudge of cooking is getting to me. The kids want me to cook more, but they don't want to eat what I cook. I'm baking lots of bread.
Teach the kids to cook. Previous generations of parents recognized children as a source of household labor.
I was chief cook in our house from age 14.
