Nearly 4 weeks ago I very badly twisted my ankle and ended up with a foot the size of a grapefruit, the colour of an eggplant and in serious pain. Since then the foot has returned to normal size, the colour is back to normal but the pain persists, especially in the area just to the front of my ankle joint, just below and in the bone(s) immediately above it. The pain varies in intensity (it gets worse if I sit cross-legged with the foot underneath or if I wear anything but flats or if I just bend my ankle the wrong way) and sometimes I'll get a wave of intense but dull pain up my calf. I've tried ibuprofen, pain patches, ice . . . but it just won't leave. Is it possible I cracked the bone when I fell? And other than just waiting is there anything I can do? I want to be able to wear heels again!

You probably should have had an x-ray at the time you sprained it, but since you are still having problems, you should see a doctor and I'll bet he will order an x-ray and possibly follow-up with an MRI. If there is not a fracture, you could have bruising of the bones in your ankle, which can take up to a year to heal.
A bad sprain can take a lot longer than 4 weeks to heal. And you might have cracked a bone too. At 4 weeks out it's too late to do much about that.
Are you ignoring it or are you actively taking care of it? You should have it wrapped when you are up and about and keep it elevated as much as possible.
Went to the Urgent Care last night and got confirmation it was a "bad sprain". They wrapped it in an Ace bandage and gave me some instructions/recommendations on how to treat it. Luckily I'd been doing most of that already so apparently I should be back to normal within a few weeks. All a very interesting experience.
