Large Study Suggests Blood Type O May Be a Protective Factor Against COVID-19

The personal genomics and biotechnology company 23andMe is perhaps best known for its home DNA testing kits, whereby consumers can learn about their genetic make-up or ancestry.

However, after the COVID-19 outbreak was declared a global pandemic, the company switched gears and looked to see how their gene testing services could offer a helping hand in understanding the disease’s pathophysiology.

I ordered a testing kit off of Amazon after my brother told me he was A+. I thought hopefully I could be one of those siblings that might not necessarily match my sibling, but no...... I am an A+.

Interesting...but from the article/blurb:

"In percentages, in the entire population, individuals with blood group O were 9-18% less likely to test positive when compared to other groups. "Exposed" individuals with blood group O were 13-26% less likely to test positive."

That's a relatively small reduction and obviously you can't change your blood type, so it is what it is.

I'm sure some people will see the words "protective factor" and assume they are immune when they are anything but so that's a bit irresponsible, depending on the audience. Doctors/researchers would understand but not so much the general public. In practical terms, just because you're Type O doesn't mean you don't need to wear a mask.

Nice!

Good to know Rh factor doesn't matter, and it's just O's all around

O RH Positive and husband is same. Older daughter is same but younger daughter is O RH Negative. Never found that out until she became pregnant. Also never knew two RH Positive parents can still have a RH Negative child.

My six siblings and I are all A+. (Dad was AA+, Mom was OO+).

My husband is B-, so we could have had children of literally any blood type. We ended up with two A- and one AB-.

I'm O- and my parents are O+ and B+.

When you're talking about traits, genes, alleles, and the good old Punnett square, remember people that are Rh +, are either ++ or +-. So just knowing that I'm Rh - and both of my parents are Rh +, that means they were both +- and there was a 25% chance that I would be ++ (Rh +), a 50% chance I would be +- (Rh +) and a 25% chance I would be -- (Rh -).

If both parents are ++ (Rh +), then yes, all their children will be ++ (Rh +).

If one parent is ++ (Rh +) and the other is +- (Rh +), then all their children will be Rh +, either ++ or +-.

I’m AB -. I don’t think it affects susceptibility to Covid but it’s not good for other diseases I’ve read about. Fortunately husband and kids are all Rh + and either A or B.
